Mendy focused on PSG survival scrap

Mon 31 Mar, 09:15 AM

Paris Saint-Germain matchwinner Bernard Mendy insists his side have no time to celebrate their Coupe de la Ligue success on Saturday.Relegation from Ligue 1 is still staring PSG squarely in the face.

Mendy stroked home an injury-time penalty to earn the Parisians a 2-1 win over Lens in Saturday's final and a third Coupe de la Ligue title.

But after the match, it was clear that this final was a mere sideshow for PSG coach Paul Le Guen and his players, the main event being keeping the club in the top flight.

With eight matches left, they currently occupy the final relegation place in the bottom three and are without a win in eight games.

Mendy said: "We are not going to have a party.

"We now have to turn our focus on the league match on Wednesday at home to Strasbourg. We must win that.

"It is a funny old season but I think there will be better days ahead. We have won here and it is good for the morale but it is now up to us to continue on this path so we can stay up.

"We have another final to play on Wednesday."

Mendy was coolness personified as he stepped up to take his penalty, which came in the third of the allotted four minutes of stoppage time after Peguy Luyindula was adjudged to have been brought down by Vitorino Hilton.

"I had been preparing myself for extra time, and then that happened," said Mendy, who came on as a substitute midway through the second half.

"After Peguy was fouled, Jerome (Rothen) wanted to take the penalty but I had said to him during the week that it was me who would take it. So I took the responsibility.

"I did it like I had done in training, without changing at the last minute. I don't know if we can say I had finesse - the essential thing was to find the target."

Lens coach Jean-Pierre Papin was furious with referee Laurent Duhamel for awarding the last-gasp penalty.

But Luyindula, who had also come on as a second-half substitute, insisted the official had got it spot on.

"I am saying from the bottom of my heart - I got to the ball ahead of him and passed by him," said the former Marseille striker.

"I got in the box and then there was contact. When you are at full speed, you don't need much to knock you off balance.

"I think the referee was right to award a penalty."

Papin was also critical of the decision not to award Lens a corner just before Mendy's goal, with PSG goalkeeper Mickael Landreau having tipped over a shot by Yohann Demont.

"Monsieur Duhamel seems a nice man he must accept the fact that he made a mistake. He is human," he said.

"I cannot reproach my players. There were some doubts about our ability to play good football.

"But we proved we can do great things, even though Monsieur Duhamel decided otherwise.

"Paris weren't as strong as us."

Papin also called for strong measures against PSG after seeing their supporters parade a banner which read 'Paedophiles, unemployed, inter-relationships - welcome to the people of Lens'.

Ligue 1 side Metz were on Thursday docked a point and ordered to play a match behind closed doors after one of their fans racially abused Valenciennes captain Abdeslam Ouaddou in a recent league match.

Papin feels PSG should also be sanctioned, adding: "When I see banners of the Paris supporters

"We are trying to fight against racism. We judged Metz severely - I think we have to judge Paris severely."
