Berra Eyeing Top-Six Finish

Mon 31 Mar, 08:09 AM

Captain Christophe Berra is determined to see Hearts pile the pressure on sixth-placed Falkirk by making no mistake in their must-win match at Kilmarnock on Saturday.

Hearts trail Falkirk by one point heading into the final round of matches before the split in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League.

Hearts go to Rugby Park two days before Falkirk take on Aberdeen, who themselves could climb into the top half.

Falkirk's goalless draw with Kilmarnock on Saturday allowed both Hearts, who beat Dundee United 1-0, and Aberdeen, 4-3 winners at Inverness, to move within a single point of John Hughes' men. Hearts have a better goal difference than the Dons.

Berra said: "It's all to play for in the last game before the split and we will be going to Rugby Park trying to get the points."

Owner Vladimir Romanov was in the crowd on Saturday as the Jambos clinched a narrow win over United.

Berra said: "No matter if Mr Romanov is here or not, we should be going out there every week and putting performances in like that."

Laryea Kingston's goal was the clincher at Tynecastle, and United had Garry Kenneth and Danny Swanson sent off in the late stages.

Aberdeen's hero at Inverness was 19-year-old substitute striker Chris Maguire, who grabbed a stoppage-time winner.

Maguire hopes to be given a shot at being a hero again when Jimmy Calderwood's side face Falkirk next Monday.

Maguire said: "It was vital that we won and to take that into next week is great, so hopefully I can score the winner next week as well.

"When the boss told me to go on, he just said, 'Go and see if you can win us the game', and I'm delighted that I managed to do that."

Inverness had Russell Duncan sent off during the half-time interval and Grant Munro was also red-carded for dissent after the final whistle.

Falkirk's match against Killie lacked quality, and boss Hughes repeated his recent criticism of the decision to allow two Scotland Under-20 rugby matches to be played on the Bairns' pitch, leaving it in a poor condition.

"Whoever in their wisdom wanted to bring rugby to the football pitch, with the style that we play, at that time of the year, I think they have to look at it," Hughes told BBC Radio Scotland.

"Someone has to look at it, the surface wasn't conducive to our style of play."

Motherwell moved level on points with third-placed Dundee United after beating Hibernian 1-0 at Fir Park, and the Steelmen have two games in hand.

David Clarkson's early goal saw off United and improved Motherwell's hopes of qualifying for the UEFA Cup after five games without a win.

Clarkson said: "It would have been hard for us if we hadn't won this match."

Gretna's relegation was confirmed by their 2-0 defeat at St Mirren, whose goals came from Craig Dargo and Billy Mehmet.

Gretna midfielder Gavin Skelton, who saw 22 players at the club made redundant last week, said: "I would be lying if I said it didn't bother me.

"We are desperate. People say we have nothing to play for, but we have our own future careers to play for, as well as the club."
