Lindsay Davenport made a successful return to the Sony Ericsson Open after a five-year absence by beating Camille Pin of France 6-2 6-1.
Davenport, who is world-ranked 33 after having her first child in June, was always in control against Pin who struggled with an injury during their second round match.
"I'd have never thought that five years ago would have been the last time I played here," Davenport said.
"But I didn't play for a couple of years, got injured, was pregnant. I mean, just a lot of things got in the way.
"But I have to say I've really enjoyed myself so far this year. I was excited when I got back out on that court. It's a great, great center court," she added.
Pin had called for a medical time-out with the trainer for a lower left back problem after winning her first game of the match - the fourth game of the first set.
The Frenchwoman also received treatment for the injury with Davenport leading 4-1 and 5-2. In the second set, after Pin held serve, Davenport won the next six to close out the match.
"I know she got injured, and I don't think she ran down as many balls as she normally does," Davenport said.
"I was kind of trying to get used to the conditions out there. For here it's a pretty calm day, but it's still a steady breeze going one way.
"But I'm happy to get off the court relatively fast and pretty efficient," added the number 32 seed who has won four titles since returning to the tour last August.
World number two Ana Ivanovic breezed past Frenchwoman Emilie Loit 6-1 6-2 in her second round match. The Serb, who hit 20 winners against six for Loit, served well and never faced a break point in the 45-minute match.
Meanwhile, seventh seed Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia won 6-2 6-1 against Milagros Sequera of Venezuela and 13th seed Dinara Safina of Russia beat qualifier Aleksandra Wozniak of Canada 6-2 6-2.
