Real Madrid defender Fabio Cannavaro will not be joining former club Napoli at the end of the season, according to the Serie A club's president.

Italy's World Cup winning captain, whose contract at the Bernabeu expires at the end of the season, has been strongly linked with a move back to his first professional club.

The 35-year-old has even admitted he would like to end his playing days in Napoli, where he was born and where his younger brother, Paolo, still plays.

But Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis has denied his club are interested in taking back the central defender, who has also been linked with fellow Italian side Milan.

"His contract is running out at Real Madrid but I have always said he will not come to Napoli. I think he will go and play elsewhere," De Laurentiis said.

Cannavaro took his time to settle in Madrid following his move from Juventus in the summer of 2006, but has been a regular fixture in Los Merengues' back line this season, making 21 Liga appearances so far and seven in the Champions League.
