Manchester United defender Gary Neville lasted almost an hour of a reserve-team draw with Newcastle at St James' Park on Monday night.
Neville has been out for two months with a groin injury, another lengthy spell on the sidelines in an injury-plagued two years for the veteran defender.
However, it seems he is edging closer to full fitness again and could come into contention for next Sunday's Premier League clash with Aston Villa at Old Trafford, or the Champions League showdown with FC Porto 48 hours later.
It was young striker Federico Macheda who made the biggest impression, grabbing a hat-trick for the visitors to earn them a share of the spoils as the match finished 3-3.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Red Devils side took the lead in the first half through a Macheda penalty after Claudio Cacapa was penalised for handball.
Neville and Ritchie De Laet gave away a penalty as they were both in close attendance of Xisco when the Spaniard went to ground, and he duly stuck away the spot-kick.
Mark Doninger gave Newcastle the lead in the second period only for Macheda to equalise with a quarter of an hour remaining after Reece Brown had replaced Neville.
Danny Guthrie smashed home from 25 yards for 3-2, but Macheda finished in the final minute to earn a draw.

To Igwe g, the Goat, i'm sure Sir Bobby Chalton would make a better choice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GARY NEVILLE MUST PLAY FOR LIVERPOOL THEY HAVE MORE WINS MAN U DONT HAVE A CHANCE BECRUSE THEY ARE DOWN IN THE DUMPS
It does makr you womder if certain players do make a big difference to a team?
Managers search for the right blend and so often one player can make a difference, of which soes not make complete sense. I guess ther are 'KEY' players??
Beckham, Fabregas, Gerrard etc.etc
I am an admirer of ManU, definitely not a fan, which should not even be a required comment for a message board, leave the chants and taunts to the terraces.
Dustin is right
mr ugly back!!!!!!!!!!!! warn the kids not to look
Typical dumb Man U, always relying on old players, am sure Bobby Charlton will make a come back
find it a bit sad that ,first he was said to have spit at the guy's feet, now it's he spat at the guy,and what evidence ? they collected saliva and will compare with a dna swabing from fabregas mouth ? too much csi the poor guy watches, such a good coach getting down so low for something that,if it really happened, should have stayed away from the media, instead of fuelling a hooligan spirit that don't really need help from coaches and football officials.shame on hull's coach, who's bringing a good hull team down to mud level.
Manchester United must be getting desperate for non banned players :-)
