How we miss Roman Abramovich's largesse. There was a time when he would happily splash £25 million on an unspectacular engine room type - now he is trying to sign cut-price 31-year-olds.
The oldster in question is David Trezeguet of Juventus . The Frenchman is an excellent finisher but has never been the most mobile and surely looks like another Andriy Shevchenko-style failure waiting to happen.
Despite this, Chelsea are eager to add to their two front-line strikers, particularly as Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka change their mood more often than a catwalk model changes her outfit.
Juve are prepared to let Trezeguet go for £8m as they have their eyes on the spectacular Fabio Quagliarella of Udinese.
Maybe Samuel Eto'o's people read yesterday's Gossip Shop, or maybe they just wanted to alleviate the boredom of in inaternational week.
Either way, they have fuelled rumours that the Cameroonian could sign for Liverpool for £18m.
Some 'source' or other told The Sun: "Benitez likes Samuel a lot. Everything is possible for this summer. It will depend on Barcelona's results as well if they decide to buy David Villa ."
Gareth Barry has said he will consider his future at Aston Villa if the club do not qualify for the Champions League this season.
Given that they almost certainly will not, that means another summer of tedious transfer rumours and a possible £20m move.
Liverpool failed to land Villa's then-skipper last summer, and were prepared to sell Xabi Alonso to fund the deal.
Alonso has since emerged as one of Rafa Benitez's best players, which means a move to Arsenal seems much more likely this time around. Whatever the case, it promises to be life-sapping stuff.
Over at Newcastle, they are planning a mass summer clearout , whether they go down or not.
The Magpies have a squad chock-full of overpaid underachievers, and Michael Owen, Joey Barton, Damien Duff and Dennis Wise will be on the bikes (a pair of tandems) at the end of the season.
Newcastle's main problem appears to lie in finding anyone idiotic enough to take them.
Former Lens man John Utaka hardly plays for Portsmouth any more, making a return to France seem both plausible and eminently sensible. But why Bordeaux would be persuaded to pay £7m for him - as the Daily Star suggests - remains a complete mystery.
As a Liverpool player, Andriy Voronin was more useful as Emmanuel Petit's stunt double than he was as a goalscorer, but he has rediscovered his mojo on loan at Hertha Berlin.
However, the German title-chasers will only complete a £4m deal for the Ukrainian if they qualify for the Champions League. Fiscal prudence - pah!
Further down the food chain, Sunderland are hot on the heels of Millwall's Zak Whitbread, Leicester City want Swindon's £2m-rated striker Simon Cox and Nottingham Forest will splash out £1m for Peter Levein of MK Dons .

well done obiwan242!! spoken like a true scouser!!!
Chealea never learn......look what happen to Ricardo Quesmara his not even in the team. And all you Chelsea fans were kissing his @#$%. And who say Trezegeut will do good..
Chelsea learn and stop throwing your money around
Etoo is excellent but 18m 28yrs old, please no. Maybe 10m-12m is ok. Sacrifice Xabi for Barry, I don't see anything in Barry that Xabi couldn't do better. Need better full back and winger instead.
What do you mean voronin would be good for Liverpool. We already have him and he was rubbish.
Eto'o staying at Barca! These aren't true storys. 4m(?!) is like nothing for Voronin. Voronin and Agüero would be good for Liverpool!
what a waste of money if he signs this no-hoper, Shevchenko is better and he was bad in the prem, get s.eto'o
mark k my fist your face :)
chelsea should take this and get a player like David trezeguet
i hope we can get a stiker like eto'o he is a professional as for alonso i prefer him more then garry i want eto'o and a good winger like joaquin he's maybe 6 m and sell lucas voronin dossena and put babel on loan to have more experience and also get glen it will the strongest team ever

MORE RUBBISH TALK ABOUT CHELSEA BUT WHO KNOWS AS THEY NEVER SEEM TO LEARN
Re 51. During the last pre-season Brazil played in the Olympics and I watched all their games. I have to tell you that one of their best players was Lucas. I know this sounds crazy and I bow to the opinion of regular Liverpool fans who have watched him regularly and hold him in low regard but nonetheless in that tournament he looked a player. I would not be surprised if Liverpool sold him and he goes on to blossom elsewhere. Perhaps a bit like the guy at Real Madrid, having been discarded by Chelsea and Arsenal.
Again-more invalid comments yeehaw
