Russian fourth seed Elena Dementieva was shown the exit at the French Open with a 6-3 4-6 6-1 defeat by Australian Samantha Stosur in the third round.
The Olympic champion, who benefited from Jelena Dokic's retirement in the previous round while she was one set down, bowed out after two hours 12 minutes.
Stosur, seeded 30th, relied on a devastating forehand to break decisively in the eighth game of the first set.
Dementieva saved a set point as Stosur netted a routine volley but she was outwitted when the Australian came to the net after a weak service return.
Dementieva was the first to hold serve for 3-2 in the second set and she hung on to level the contest on her second set point when Stosur overcooked a forehand.
The Australian, who has only reached the fourth round of a Grand Slam once before, raced to a 4-0 lead in the decider and prevailed on her second match point with another forehand winner, to set up a clash with France's Virginie Razzano, who was a 7-5 7-5 winner over Italian Tathiana Garbin.
Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova's pursuit of a maiden French Open title gathered momentum when she dispatched Hungary's Melinda Czink 6-1 6-3 with the minimum of fuss.
The seventh seed was one of the in-form players coming into the championships and she ominously moved into the last 16 for the sixth year running. In three matches, Kuznetsova has lost only 11 games in total.
The first set disappeared in a blur for Czink, who surrendered it in only 22 minutes by whacking a Kuznetsova serve high into the stands.
The 26-year-old Czink offered some resistance in the second but it was never enough to trouble Kuznetsova who smashed the ball away on match point to seal a last-16 date with Polish 12th seed Agnieszka Radwanska, who had little trouble beating unseeded Ukrainian Kateryna Bondarenko 6-2 6-4.
Serbian fifth seed Jelena Jankovic stormed into the fourth round with a 6-1 6-1 crushing of Australian Jarmila Groth.
After luring her opponent into a false sense of security by dropping serve in the opening game, Jankovic quickly showed her who was boss by tearing through the rest of the set.
Jankovic, chasing a maiden grand slam title, let her opponent have another consolation break in the sixth game of the second but her benevolence was short-lived and she claimed victory when 73rd-ranked Groth netted a forehand.
The former world number one, who has dropped just 10 games at these championships, will face Romanian teenager Sorana Cirstea, who beat Caroline Wozniacki 7-6 7-5 in the final match of the day after her Danish opponent had ben up 5-0 in the first set at one point.
Serena Williams overcame a sluggish start to beat Spain's Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 4-6 6-3 6-4.
The American second seed will next face 24th seed Aleksandra Wozniak, after the Canadian battled to a 6-2 3-6 6-3 win over Spain's Lourdes Dominguez Lino.
Martinez Sanchez bagged an ill-tempered opening set after breaking in the fifth game with a controversial shot which appeared to have bounced off her arm.
Annoyed with the call, Williams went on to level the contest and her opponent eventually ran out of steam, bowing out after two hours 11 minutes on the first match point.

Such a good match for Carstea...she will be sure the future...I see her in Top 10 in two years
So much for the upcoming ladies.....where is Lisicki? Wozniacki? Cornet? Bondarenko? Kleybanova? Would love to see Safina win this GS!
Common Serena, one Russian down, three to go. Beat them all three, like you did at the Australian Open, running all over them all.
Allez Serena
Looks like Safina-Sharapova and Kuznetsova -Jankovic in semis.3 Russians 1 Serbian.Even I would like to see Maria's win her missing Slam only,I have to say, so far Safina's game seems unbeatable on RG 2009.
!!!!!!!! WOW !!!!!!!! NEW CONTENDER!
SORANA CIRSTEA bt. Caroline Wozniacki 7-6(7-3) 7-5.
She is SUCH a solid player, AND she looks VERY similar to ANA IVANOVIC.
I would LOVE to see an ANA IVANOVIC vs SORANA CIRSTEA Final!
AJDE ANA! Come On Cirstea!
It's understandable that umpires make bad calls but is there any ounce of integrity left in a player called M. Martinez Sanchz? For a grown lady to adamantly insist that the ball hit her racket instead of her arm shows she wants to win by any means necessary....including lying and cheating. We have Justin Henin and now M Martinez Sanchz. I have lost count how many times Serena have to be a victim of players either cheating or lying and umpires not doing their job.
Sorry to see Dementieva out, but maybe Samantha deserved to win. That's one Russian less, but thanks God mine is going straight. Brawo Maria! C'mon, you can do it!
what a babe serena is
Final: Jankovic - Ivanovic!!!
pucoman87..hope not Cause then I am sure it would be a Boring Final:D:D..my thought Is sharapova-Jankovic Final:D:D
Dementieva: over rated hype. always a bridesmaid and never the bride.
she's lucky that her last opponent couldn't finish the match otherwise Stosur would be playing v. Dokic.
Shame for Elena... really nice girl !
Simon Reed's tip for the title gets beaten in the first week. Well done Simon.
THE RUSSIAN BRIGADE! There are so many Russians on the WTA tour that they can avoid destroying each other before the semis and the finals. Elena is down and more to follow.
Such a shame for Elena but have to say well done Sam.Hope Kuzzie gets to the final with Vika sorry to see Venus go out.
Yes, one Russian down, but THE BEST are stil on RG and one of them will win it.
One russian down...
Stosur really showed Dementieva who was boss.
Dementieva did not know what hit her.lol.
This was pay back for Aussie Open. Too bad Stosur cheated there in doubles.
Stosur deserves this win, Dementieva wasn't great troughout the whole match but Stosur really finished her off in set 1 & 3 :]
We all know: Final is going to be Safina - Kuznjetsova...
Bravo Svetlana!!! She is very talented woman and she can go further, why not to the final.....but she has to be 100% mentally on the court.
