Osasuna beat Real Madrid 2-1 to relegate Betis, who could only draw 1-1 at home to Valladolid on the final day of the La Liga season.
Betis and four other teams were in danger of joining relegated Recreativo Huelva and Numancia at the start of the day but it was the Seville-based side who failed at the last hurdle after seven seasons in the top flight.
Battling wins for Osasuna and Sporting Gijon and a comeback draw for Getafe were enough to keep them up and Valladolid's point also ensured their safety.
A stunning second-half strike from Juanfran gave Osasuna the victory which lifted them out of the relegation zone at Betis' expense.
Betis were only relegated on goal difference, with Ricardo Oliveira's equaliser not enough to see the hosts through after substitute Marco Aguirre gave Valladolid the lead.
Earlier, a hat-trick from captain Raul Tamudo gave Espanyol a 3-0 win over eighth-placed Malaga to move the Barcelona-based club up to 10th.
It was Espanyol's eighth win in their last 10 matches, a run that saved them from relegation, and the final match at the Olympic Stadium on Montjuic before their move to Cornella-El Prat.
Sevilla, assured of third place and a spot in next season's Champions League, beat Numancia 2-0 thanks to an 88th-minute strike from Emiliano Armenteros and a Juan Carlos Moreno own goal in stoppage time.
Treble winners Barcelona ended the season with a 1-1 draw at Deportivo Coruna which took them up to 87 points from 38 matches, their highest ever tally.
They also scored their most ever goals in a season and with 105 fell just two short of Real Madrid's record of 107 in 1989-90.
Real finished on 78 points in second and Sevilla on 70.
Atletico Madrid's 3-0 home win over Almeria secured them a place in Champions League qualifying and Villarreal (fifth), Valencia (sixth) and King's Cup runners-up Athletic Bilbao go into the new Europa League.

If you saw the way Osasuna played today, with heart and determination, you know that they've deserved to win. How on earth Gijon have stayed up is a MIRACLE! Along with Recre, they have safely been the worst.
Eurosport site editors.. Please correct what's showing in the La Liga table in the site.. It shows Sporting de Jijon relegated because there is an error in Sporting's match result.. It ended 2-1 for Sporting NOT 1-1..
Hard Luck Betis.
Osasuna were lucky that they played Barcelona and Real Madrid when both had nothing to play for.. Had they play them a bit earlier, they would have been relegated, almost for sure.
lol real lost again!
