Newcastle winger Damien Duff admits some of his team-mates at St James' Park did not care if the club got relegated to the Championship.
Duff, who is prepared to stay to get the club back into the Barclays Premier League, wants Alan Shearer to be appointed manager and believes the man who took them down clearly knows which players were not putting in a shift to keep them in the top flight.
"There will obviously be a massive clear-out, there are budgets in the Championship and also I'm sure the gaffer knows who cares about the club and who stays, who's going work to get out of the Championship," Duff said. "He knows that already."
He added: "There is only one man to get us back up and that is Alan Shearer. I'm sure it'll be him and I'm sure he'll take the job."
With Duff admitting Newcastle will have to take budgets into consideration, his situation could become uncertain as he is a high earner - but he is adamant he wants to stay.
"From a Newcastle point of view, the aim is to come straight back up," the 30-year-old said. "They belong in the Premier League so it is just one season in the Championship hopefully.
"I haven't really looked into it but I've done two years in the Championship before with Blackburn. Why not?"
Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni has hinted that a stint in the second tier of English football would not harm Duff's international hopes.
Trapattoni said: "He is a great player and the great players are great players, in Ireland, in Newcastle, yesterday or tomorrow."

Good on him wanting to stay. Shows that not all players are wanting money these days and want to play for the pride of saying he got Newcastle back up.
The problem is with recruiting championship level players, that is where they belong, unless of course you manage to recruit a whole bunch of very talented and hungry players who will get the club straight back into the top flight. They need to gel from day one and be on the same page with a great manager, be it Shearer or whoever. But for that to happen over the summer and then expect them to win the league next year? It's optimistic to say the least. I want to see Newcastle back up there in 2010 but it seems like losing Shay Given was the start of their nightmare which could span several seasons.
Well thats good news fo Newcastle fans that Duff is prepared to stay, but what he should ask himself is why would they want him to?
He is useless and that goes to almost every player in that squad.
The blame is completely on the owner and string of useless managers that have haunted Newcastle ever since the great man Robson was let go.
They have to get there massive wage bill down so i would think Duff will be one of the first to go along with Martins, Coloccini, and Owen on a free aswell as Viduka.
The only good thing that could possibly come from this is a chance for Newcastle to start again if you like, get rid of all the high wages and start again with young players from the championship who would love the chance to play for such a well supported club with a great stadium plus there is some great young players in the lower leagues.
Also Shearer cant have full control, they should appoint Coppel or someone who knows Championship football and let Shearer learn from him so eventually he can take over, as giving him complete control could be a massive mistake financially if they dont bounce back up next year.
See you Great supporters in just over a year, the prem wont be the same without you.
can't sell Owen, out of contract (like Fat-uka)
If the first team were so uninterested, why not use the reserves or youth team who want to fight
Lets face it the whole team was @#$% ont just some. Hope to see the toon back soon!!!
Duff should have gone to Liverpool when he had the chance, it`s way to late for him now..
i admire alan s as much as the next man but what has happened to poor joe kinnear.
Mr Duff did you clear this with the club before you talked to the Press?.Comments like this are best expressed to your manager face to face in his office. Its the equivalent of being a turkey voting for Christmas.

Too many old men, living a dream, that they could still perform as their early days. Taylor at the back had the passion while others done a days work and got paid without the belief they enjoyed what they are doing.
Get some youngsters in who want to play for the Club, you are lucky if you buy success with immediate affect, all Keegan has done in the past is to survive, he can not take the pressure and that comes out on the playing field, no wonder he left in September, he saw what he had and got out before he was embarassed with relegation.

duff is talking about owen.

Even us shower at Derby managed to take 4 points off you last season which took us to 13 points so I was amazed you didn't go down with us then. Whatever, we look forward to two more easy games and loads more points next season off you. Up the Rams!!!
duff your having a joke m8 you know the players who didnt play for the club are you on that list. you had so much talent when you were young but what happened Newcastle should try to get any money they can for you play for your colors not the money my friend.
the reason no one is commented on owen and viduka is because this article is about duff not the latter 2 that is why, but you are correct they are useless as well lol
shearer will take time to say hes a proper manager. i dont think he can make tough decision and take off big names. he was a great player but as we all know thet doesn"t translate to big managers. even on the BBC he was taking rubish. on the bbc it is always lovely jubbly. whenever a game is on why dont they say what really is going on istead of painting the perfect picture for the audience. criticise what needs to be criticised. rem fans shouting towards Shearer "you should have stayed on the telly" to
