Modest Biggar plays down performance

Sun 31 May, 01:51 PM

Man-of-the-match Dan Biggar refused to take the plaudits following Wales' hard-fought victory over Canada.

Fly-half Biggar, 19, made his first start for Wales - his second international appearance - and kicked to perfection, sending over six penalties and two conversions of tries by Chris Czekaj and Tom James as the tourists won the Test 32-23 at York University Stadium.

"It was nice to knock a few points over, definitely, but that deflects away from the team effort," he said. "The boys put us in great positions in terms of our carries and our runs. Tom James and Chris Czekaj were absolutely brilliant and they did great work covering back and putting us in good positions."

He added: "Simply enough my job was just to knock a few shots over so they did all the hard work and I did a lot of the easy work so individually I'm pleased with the way it went but I'd like to build on that now for next week (against the USA)."

"It's always nice," Biggar said of his man-of-the-match award. "But I think I'd be more happy with a better team performance to be honest.

"We're not particularly pleased with it. There were aspects where we were very good and there were some aspects where we were poor - a lot of balls down, some sloppy passes, sloppy breakdown work, turning a lot of ball over.

"At the end of the day, though, we've come to a difficult place to play rugby away from home and we've got a good win."
