Whelan sets Bruce price

Sun 31 May, 11:14 AM

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has revealed he wants £3million compensation from Sunderland for manager Steve Bruce.

Whelan has given Bruce permission to talk to Black Cats chairman Niall Quinn and he expects a decision to be made by the end of Sunday.

Bruce re-joined Wigan in November 2007 after Whelan agreed a compensation package with Birmingham.

He told Sportsweek on Radio Five Live: "I paid Birmingham a compensation fee and I think it is only fair they buy his contract out. I paid Birmingham £3million and I am asking for the same amount back.

"There are a lot of managers on the market at moment you can get for nothing. It depends whether Sunderland feel they want to pay £3million. If they want real, real quality managers Steve is up there.

"I said to Steve and to Niall that if you are going to do a deal, do it quickly. Niall spoke to me and said 'I understand we can't mess about on this and by Sunday evening we will have a decision for you'."

  1. I am suprised that suderland would go for Bruce he has won nothing and is a JrManager not really a "Big Name" I also to be honest thought he was a newcastle person.
His stickability is to my mind questionable as if he is asked to time a budget seems to throw his toys out the pram?
I would have thought that there were bigger fish to catch myself

you are 100% delusional if you think anybody outside monkwearmouth gives a flying fox about your club - the media certainly don't, and as for the amount of responses these forums get regarding your club, neither do your own fans!! There are more posting on the NUFC pages than there are on here!

  5. Ugh fantastic. Leaving us for Sunderland. We can never hold on 2 decent managers, they don't like to stay at 'Little Wigan.' And getting good managers is hard because they don't want 2 come 2 'Little Wigan'

  6. as the only north east team in the PL I think SAFC need someone special at the club to take them forward ,as Sbragia said a big name ,does anyone believe that Bruce is a big name
Keano was bigger name and club was too big for him so Bruce has no chance
Is there anyone out there who can may Sunderland BIG again, the pressure from media and fans are just too much for some of the managers that are available at present

  7. good luck sunderland brucie will just about keep you afloat, but your chances of winning anything with him are nil.and as a better deal comes along its the same old story adios sunderland.there are plenty better managers out there bruce only loyalty his to his bank balance.
