Premier League - Papers Cesc out, Gourcuff in?

Eurosport - Mon, 31 May 09:19:00 2010

Arsenal are still hoping to hang on to their talisman Cesc Fabregas but they have already earmarked his replacement should he leave for Barcelona and surprise, surprise - it's a Frenchman.

According to The Sun, Arsene Wenger could make schemer Yoann Gourcuff his second summer capture from Ligue 1 side Bordeaux after already nabbing Marouane Chamakh on a free.

The French side are still smarting from the loss of their star striker for nothing, so will not negotiate with Arsenal, but Gourcuff has a clause in his contract that says he can leave for £21.8 million, and the Gunners could well afford that club record fee if they sell Fabregas for £35m to Barcelona.

Such is Arsenal's interest, they have apparently already spoken to Yoann's dad, Christian, about a potential move. Christian is a former footballer himself and currently manages Lorient.

Across London at Stamford Bridge, and Chelsea are set to make Yossi Benayoun their somewhat surprising first signing of the summer (Guardian, Daily Telegraph).

Liverpool have rejected a £4m bid for the Israeli but have given the Blues indication that a £6m bid will be enough.

Benayoun said: "Ancelotti wants me for next season and now everything depends on Liverpool. Chelsea will have to pay some £6m, but I believe that, in the end, I'll be moving there."

That signing will cast further doubt on the future of Joe Cole whose future still looks to be away from Stamford Bridge.

Manchester United, Tottenham and even Arsenal are mentioned as possible destinations for Cole across the various papers.

Also potentially on his way to Stamford Bridge is Croatian full-back Darijo Srna who could make a £14m move from Shakhtar Donetsk (Daily Mail).

Liverpool of course are fighting to keep onto a number of players this summer. Another old rumour has now resurfaced with Barcelona again linked with Javier Mascherano, who they courted last season (Daily Mail). Any move for the Argentine though could depend on whether Barca have any money left after a potential deal for Fabregas.

One player who could move to Anfield though is young Rangers defender Danny Wilson. The Reds have had a £2m bid for the 18-year-old turned down but are ready to come back with a better offer (The Sun).

According to the Daily Star, Aston Villa are set to lose both John Carew (Fiorentina) and Emile Heskey (Stoke) this summer, so they will be after a big man up front, and Wigan's Hugo Rodallega is said to be their number one target.

However, The Sun reckons it is Bobby Zamora who they are after, with Sunderland and Birmingham also linked with the Fulham striker.

Villa also want Ajax full-back Gregory van der Wiel who would cost around £4m and they could get most of that money back by shifting off Luke Young to West Ham for £3.5m (Daily Star).

Manchester City are weighing up a deal for highly rated Athletic Bilbao midfielder Javi Martinez who made his full Spain debut at the weekend. That's in the Daily Mail, and the same paper claims Fulham are interested in versatile Hungarian midfielder Daniel Tozser who plays for Genk in Belgium and who would cost around £2.5m.

Finally, newly promoted Blackpool are eyeing up a £500,000 move for Celtic's Paddy McCourt.

  4. Holy Mackekrel!!Listen as a Man United fan I am jealous if Gourcuff goes to Arsenal..I really hope not.. thats a classic signing for them. People still dont understand how great this guy Gourcuff is, especially since Chamaka has already signed, someone he obviously has chemistry with. Bordeux didnt do that well this year but the season before they were on fire because of those two being comfortable playing there. This time I think too much unrest in the club cost them the title. But hope Aresenal dont get him or he doesnt want to go there.. Would love to see him at Man United instead.

  6. Just to add my two penneth, two of the three most successful sides in the EPL over the last 20 years have always had a large contingent of British?Ire players Man U in particular, then when Arsenal were a real force, their whole back five were British/Ire, further back when Liverpool were all conquering they were pretty much all british/Ire! The first two names on Chelseas team sheet are Terry then Lampard. If the home grown player could replicate their club form at international level, we would be seeing 3 home teams at the world cup every time. There is a tremendous amount of home grown talent who are overlooked because club managers are from abroad. Look at the successful epl British/Ire managers teams and you will find that their teams are heavily laced with homegrown talent. Man U. Spurs, Villa. I am not against bringing in players from abroad as it enriches the league but there comes a point when a team fields a whole squad without any home based players in it how can you call it an English Prem team. I believe that you should have no more than 5 players playing in the team who are not from the country they are playing in. That would benefit our youth who are being overlooked for cheaper imports and ultimately destabilising our game long term.

  7. Liverpool selling their best player this season in Benayoun, he's stood out head and shoulders above the so called superstars at anfield, another glaring mistake from the fat chef 6million for him, but who's around to buy for 6 million to replace him, oh we got maxi ( rubbish).

  8. I hope Arsenal come good next season, I love watching the way they "attack from the back" every player has flair, the ball mostly stays on the grass, and the speed that they counter attack is amazing to watch....oh and im a manu fan by the way !!

  9. Cesc should not go for less than £50 million IMO. Wenger has already got the ideal replacement at the club already in young Ramsey, why waste money on another midfielder, its a striker thats more of a priority.

  10. I'd definetely put my money on it being a non English player. Maybe if Arsenal bought some home grown players they would make a difference. Its like a United Nations team nowadays. The Premiership has always been won by a team with a few homegrown players and maybe they should look into that.

  20. I wouldn't loose sleep about Barca deluding themselves into thinking Fabregas will solve their problem against Real Madrid and Jose Mourinho. That being said, Gourcuff and Eden Hazard would only bring more flair and fire power to Arsenal i bet Barca would still peer and want either of these players catalan or not. Gourcuff is a cross between Fabregas and Van Persie, he will be better for us, he is taller and dribbles better than Fabregas, his set pieces are better, Fabregas has better vision and passing range, but he is weaker than Gourcuff in terms of strength and guile. Eden Hazard will easily draw 2-3 defenders opening up the game for v.Persie, Chamakh, Gourcuff, Nasri and Arshavin. With British bred defenders, we will be better off selling Fabregas. I hope we also have plans for Wilshere and Ramsey on the squad.
