Vaughan off as Fire douse Toffees

Thu 31 Jul, 10:00 AM

James Vaughan was sent off as Everton lost 2-0 to Chicago Fire in the first game of their US tour - and could miss the start of the season.Goals either side of half-time from Chris Rolfe and Tomasz Frankowski proved to be enough for the MLS side at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Illinois.

Everton thought they should have had a penalty four minutes before the break when Aiyegbeni Yakubu appeared to be felled in the box.

Seconds later, Chicago Fire broke the deadlock when Rolfe slotted home Patrick Nyarko's cross.

Chicago doubled their lead midway though the second half when Frankowski scored from close range after Tim Howard could only parry Peter Lowry's shot.

Everton's miserable night was compounded late on when substitute Vaughan was shown a straight red card for a late foul on Daniel Woolard.

It means that Vaughan could miss the start of the new season through suspension if the dismissal is reported to the Football Association.

  1. Another of our awful starts to the season. Why Everton are always slow off the starting line is difficult to appreciate and without much needed acquisitions we must all be concerned about the season that lies ahead of us.
