Transfers - Your view: Time for Wenger to spend?

Kolo Toure's departure from Arsenal signalled the end of an era for the Gunners, so is it finally time Arsene Wenger started spending some cash?

Toure, the last remaining regular member of the 'Invincibles' from the 2003-04 season, was signed by Manchester City for £14 million and will now join fellow former Gunner Emmanuel Adebayor, whose sale brought in £25m, at Eastlands.

Wenger has long refused to bow to pressure and spend big in the transfer market, preferring instead to bring in young players and develop home-grown talent.

But with that kind of money in the bank, should Arsenal fans now expect to see big-name signings arrive at the Emirates?

Arsenal have already signed Thomas Vermaelen this summer - for £10m - but Wenger's other targets - Marouane Chamakh, Blaise Matuidi, Brede Hangeland, even Patrick Vieira - are hardly going to break the bank.

Indeed, Wenger has already baulked at the £12m wanted by Fulham for Hangeland.

But having fallen behind to Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United in the title stakes and with their place in the Big Four now under threat from City, do Arsenal have to spend big?

Some fans have already voiced their displeasure at Wenger's transfer policy, but perhaps the wily tactician does know what he's doing?

Is it just a waiting game while Wenger builds another new side or do Arsenal fans have a right to demand instant success?

  3. Arsenal did not lack quality last season but failed to­ win any trophy because the squad lacked depth. Many key­ first choice team players had long lay off's­ through injuries with attendant consequencies to the­ team's performance. We couldnt compete effectively­ against the other big three, who also had similar­ problems but coped very well, because they had bigger­ squads.
    The squad is even weaker now with the recent­ sale of two team members without replacement. There is­ need therefore to bring in additional reinforcement if­ we are to stand any chance this season.

    y do we­ need 3 strikers ?? we have 2 very good strikers and­ have vela and walcot will also be good in that position­ ! We need 1 defender , mid and striker not 3 strikers­ !
    i think De Rossi would be a great addition with some­ 1 like yaya toure in defence and alnoso from liverpool­ in mid ! we are not that far off a great team juse 3­ good players and we will win everything !!

  11. What makes you guys so sure vieira will be any good to­ us, he is old. He is no where near where he used to be­ fitness wise for, remember the season he left us? He­ look average at best, now don't get me wrong I love­ the guy and always wished he'd step on Roy­ Keane's face.. But Patrick is well passed it,­ he'd only be a good influence in the dressing rooms­ now, as for De Rossi.. I've alredy shot my load.­ Please get him he'd be world class for us, De­ Rossi, Klaas & Brede is how I like it. ­ Wouldn't mind a better goalkeeper and seeing­ Senderos, Mikel, leave.. Both are bullocks.

  12. listen lads have faith in the prof this is the man who­ bought nick anelka for peanuts and made over 23 mil­ turned average players into world class, even made­ almenia an half decent keeper, true we need to buy and­ buy properly. team is week in covering areas, stupid­ sale selling one of our best defenders, so now time to­ build the backbone down the middle from defence to­ attack, viera would b good with cesc now huntalaar­ goood buy but martins is my bet he's strong eager­ great eye for positioning himself plus he is very­ rarely injured and thats important, but have faith in­ van the man as long as he stays fit.

  15. I think Arsene Wenger should start buying some­ players...at least one or two that he really needs even­ if they are going to cost a good amount , it will be­ worth it i think. He doesnt need to spend like Real­ Madrid and Manchester City or Chelsea not so long ago,­ but he needs to revamp certain positions apart from­ make up for injuries that his team seems to be plagued­ with.

    For example a defensive midfielder..Diaby is not­ cutting it so far.. a good prospect but not a world­ beater at the moment. Also another great defender, the­ ones they have arent too bad, but again not world­ beaters. As for the injuries?...massive concern you­ look at the bench and arsenal fans must worry when any­ of the better players get injured and Aresene has to­ replace them with one of those guys.. Arsenal at the­ moment dont look as if they even have a back up plan.­ Arsenal face a tough competition against not only the­ big 4 but the likes of Aston Villa, Everton, Fullham­ and Tottenham.. it is a challenge for them to stay in­ the top 4 so for now winning the prem league and­ champions league may not be possible.. however one or­ two trophies here and there and playing consistently­ better and one or two of their stars shining on a­ consistent basis will make the arsenal fans happy for­ the moment until they do challenge strongly enough for­ a major trophy.
    So the answer is yes... i think they­ should spend some more money.

  17. no.161 i dont think its an issue that we need to­ replace nasri for the 2 months thats hes out because­ rosicky is back and we have so many fantastic players­ that can fill that position, arshavin, walcott,­ denilson, whilshire. i agree with you that we should­ buy hunterlaar. at the moment it looks like van persie­ and eduardo will be our strike force next year with­ bentner and vela as cover. these two aren't up to­ the mark yet but we cannot forget that these players­ are still very young and are already featuring in their­ national side. they can only get better!! as for de­ rossi i believe we should try and buy him but i dont­ think he'll come. totti + de rossi are the gerrard­ + carragher of roma. there is no way we'll get him­ but we will never know if we don't try. certainly a­ strong experience defensive midfielder is needed
