Serie A - Beckham to share Milan free-kicks

Eurosport - Fri, 31 Oct 14:51:00 2008

Ronaldinho will share free-kick duties with David Beckham when the England midfielder joins Milan on loan from Los Angeles Galaxy in January.

FOOTBALL 2008 MLS Los Angeles Galaxy David Beckham - 0

"He's a great champion. I hope he's happy with us. We'll take turns taking free-kicks," the Brazil forward told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

"I've met him in the past and I have always been struck by his class."

The 33-year-old Beckham is moving to Milan to keep up his fitness during the American close season and stay in contention for an England squad place.

Milan said earlier this week the former Real Madrid and Manchester United player will join them on January 7.

However, Italian media reported that he is likely to be presented as a Milan player in December and take part in a training camp in Dubai during Serie A's Christmas break.

The exact duration of the loan has not yet been revealed although Beckham has said he will return to Los Angeles for the start of the new MLS season in late March.

"No one has spoken of a permanent transfer. This hypothesis is not possible because he has a contract with Galaxy, who don't want to let him go," Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani said.

"I hope it's a painful goodbye (at the end of the loan) because that would mean he's done well."

Galliani said Milan wanted Beckham, one of world's most famous and marketable athletes, for footballing reasons, not commercial ones.

But he added that the club were studying ways to profit from the arrival of Beckham, who has won 107 England caps.

"Milan's marketing department is already working with Beckham's to develop initiatives," he said.

  1. WIth Becks, Dinho and Pirlo it'll be a tough choice who will take free kicks. But i'll stick with Pirlo

  2. The coach for England had already said that he won't call up inactive player because he thinks they are not in shape. That's why Beckham was left off the team (Galaxy last played 3-4 weeks ago). The same coach also said that he will call on Beckham after he starts playing for Milan. So the theory is that Beckham is doing this so he could get back into the national squad.
Beckham CANNOT play for America or any other country. The rule states that a player can only represent 1 country in his or her lifetime. Once the player step onto the field, he's stuck with that country for the rest of his life. I said "step onto the field" because it's possible for a reserve to play for another country as long as he doesn't play.
And for those who thinks money is his motive. He wouldn't had move to America. The money isn't much here. It's a business. Clubs make offering base on revenue. And since attendance, tv coverage, and merchandise sales arent as good in America, the clubs here don't offer as much money as European clubs.

  5. Back-@#$% will do as good in in Milan as Liverpool did in Tottenham. Old dirty greedy scuum who is doing harm to football with his greedy stupid attitude. If he wanted to do something for the English football he would have done it ages ago. One free kick against Greece and nothing before or after.

That's my point. Other england and european footballers went to the states to promote football, but that was at the END of their great playing days. If the game is so good out there and he is in top form, why is he going to Milan? Why did Fabiao recomend he go there because if he did'nt he would'nt be in the england squad? It smacks of desperation on beckhams part, if he has already in your words 'done enough for england' why is he acting like 'please sir please let me be in the squad sir I'll do anything your ask sir' even go to milan like you said sir. If he's happy in the states then stay there. Whilst the season is ended, why does'nt he go out and about the states and promoting the game by going to summer camps, give talks and organize games with the boys and girls in the camps, use his status to sell football to the american public. Then when the season starts again, him and the rest of his team really play their hearts out and make the public really love the game. That's the challenge i want him to do and succeed at, show the world that playing football in america can be as good as playing for the european teams. I'm not anti beckham it's just that i expected more from him than he has done at the moment

  9. and as for the comment of beckham playing for team america??? thats the stupidest thing i have ever heard.. beckham is prob the most patriotic and passionate player their has been for a while when it comes to playing for england, you sound like you just dont like the guy.. which is cool.. each to their own, however you cant knock the guy!!!

you couldnt be further from the truth mate.. are you saying there are no americans playing in the mls?? if not then i would say it is being forced on them, however their are americans playing in the mls.. therefore, how is soccer forced on them????
and i have never heard beckham say that the mls is or ever was rubbish so you cant possibly say it would be like an american pro coming over here saying the premiership is rubbish, yes beckham wanted to PROMOTE footy over the pond or even make the sport bigger, yet i wouldnt say he has failed, more to the point though, beckham is happy their, he has already done enough for england, it comes down to the expectations of people when it comes to beckham.. Great footballer.. Not god...he done well in the premiership, la liga, internationaly, and wanted a new challenge.. the problem with that is??

  13. So the game is growing massively over there is it, they have been saying that since the 80s and it still not up there with american football. I agree it has improved, their team played better in the world cup than ours. So what better for beckham than to play for team america in the next world cup if he is so serious about getting football known in america. Also if you had seen a programe which was shown at the beginning of the year, you would have seen no matter how many european players were bought over, Pele etc and no matter how much money was thrown at it all the teams failed and folded because there was no intrest in it. And more importantly the players that went to america had come to the END of their serious playing days and was just there for the money (their words) David in his words said he is still young and fit enough to play serious football. so why did'nt he stay in european football where he would still be playing at the top.

  15. peter.hossack,
What are you talking about? The game is growing massively over there and will continue to do so. No-one can deny the beautiful game of its beauty. American football is more like rugby. Hats off to Beckham for acheiving as much as possible in his footballing career. You cant deny he is a legend and worked hard to be so with passion. Fair play for earning a few quid on the way..

David Beckham went to America because like Best and Marsh before him, he thought he could show them that the way forward is English football and like them he has fallen on his arse and failed. As i said before, its like an american footballer comming over here and saying our game is rubbish. Each country loves their own sport and we should not force our game on them. If he is still serious about playing great football, then playing in the states was not a good way of going about it.

  17. peter hossack, did you take your current job to please yourself.. or did you take it to please other people?
Becks has done a brill job for england, and all the club sides he has played for.. he owes nobody nothing, at the end of the day, behind all the glamour is just your average father and husband who wants the best for his family and himself, and if he wishes to raise his family and career in america, the problem is??

From ricky p, on Fri 31 Oct 2:32PM
  18. If you was offered a big money job in a place like america would you not take it? to many people are quick enough to put the man down, realistically he owes no one nothing, he has the right to work anywhere he chooses just like the rest of us, he aint god, he's just your average guy earning a living through what he's good at so let him be
