SYDNEY (AFP) - Wallabies vice-captain Berrick Barnes has been ruled out of the remainder of the team?s tour of Japan and Europe with an ankle injury, the Australian Rugby Union said on Saturday.
Barnes rolled his left ankle at training on Thursday ahead of Saturday's Bledisloe Cup match against New Zealand in Tokyo, with a scan subsequently revealing that he had torn ligaments.
The injury will require further treatment, and possibly surgery, knocking the player out of action for several months, the ARU said.
Barnes, 23, will return to Australia from Tokyo on Sunday.
Australia Under-20 flyhalf Matt Toomua will now become a full replacement in the squad, after initially being called up to cover for Barnes in Tuesday's match against English Premiership club Gloucester.
Toomua, 19, will join the Wallabies' touring party when the team arrives in London on Sunday to begin its six-match tour of Britain and Ireland.
