Despite going into the match having won only one of their last six matches Roberto Di Matteo's charges knew that with Newcastle not in action until Monday night, victory by a two goal margin would move them top.

And the home side were ahead as early as the fifth minute following a Jonas Olsson header. Graham Dorrans confirmed their increasing dominance from the penalty spot after Adrian Mariappa had hauled down Luke Moore.

Moore added a third before Gianni Zuiverloon and Simon Cox completed the rout.

At the other end of the table, a David Wright header secured Roy Keane's first three points as Ipswich Town manager following a 1-0 victory over Derby County at Portman Road. The Tractor Boys remain at the foot of the table on goal difference.

Game of the day came at the Keepmoat Stadium where Doncaster Rovers and Blackpool drew 3-3. Blackpool came from behind to take a 3-2 lead into the final minute but a Billy Sharp tap in ensured the spoils were shared.

Jamie Mackie scored the only goal of the game as Gordon Strachan's reign as Middlesbrough boss opened with a 1-0 defeat against Plymouth at the Riverside.

Grzegorz Rasiak eased the pressure on Royals boss Brendan Rodgers as he grabbed a brace in Reading's 3-1 victory over Coventry at the Ricoh Arena.

Elsewhere, Bristol City drew 1-1 with Sheffield Wednesday at Ashton Gate, Peterborough United fell to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Barnsley, Preston drew 1-1 with Crystal Palace and Swansea beat Scunthorpe 2-0.
