Fed Cup 2009 - Williams pulls out of Fed Cup

Serena Williams has withdrawn from US Fed Cup team for next week's final against Italy in Calabria, the USTA said confirmed.

No reason for her withdrawal was given in the statement which said Vania King would take her place.

Serena, who will reclaim the top ranking on Monday, has not played for the US in the Fed Cup since 2007.

The US team are trying to win the competition for the first time since 2000 but Williams's withdrawal will severely weaken their chances against a strong Italy side.

King will join teenager Melanie Oudin, a quarter-finalist at the U.S. Open last month, doubles specialist Liezel Huber and Alexa Glatch.

  2. I dont agree. Serena clearly is the best player of all­ including all those you mentioned. Them at their best­ would only yield a few games agst Serena at her best.

  4. I agree that since the Williams sisters did not play in­ Fed Cup up to the final they should not steal the glory­ from the other players who won the previous ties. Sure­ being the best players in the world their participation­ will enhance the US's chance of lifting the Cup but­ think it also represents a very good opportunity for­ the likes of Vania King and Oudin to further prove­ themsleves if not gain invaluable experience.

  5. I always like when people represent their country in­ any sport. I think that it is the greatest honour to­ represent your country in your given sport and for that­ reason I am sorry that the Williams girls who are my­ favourite tennis players will not be playing. However­ having read that they did not play in the matches­ leading up to the final it would have been unfair for­ them to come in now and take all the glory. It is­ therefore good that they will not be playing

  9. Well, the USA team had reached the final without the­ Williams sisters, so why not to give credit to the­ other girl? They got a good double and the young Oudin­ played a great tournament at the US Open, so they will­ have their chaces, despite being Italy a pretty strong­ team being both Pennetta and Schiavone ranked in the­ Top 20.

    ANYONE for tennis?...As I've suggested in ­ free-online verse (web-search my name), females should­ play TABLE tennis, which puts far less stress on the­ racket/bat arm.
