Campbell admits Newcastle appeal

Sat, 31 Oct 19:34:34 2009

Sol Campbell admits he is "very interested" in a move to Newcastle after revealing they are one of the clubs keen on him.

The former England defender left Notts County after just one appearance, and will be available to move on when the League Two side agree to release his registration, which is the subject of ongoing negotiation. He has been linked with West Brom and has trained with Arsenal to keep up his fitness, but Campbell is looking at which clubs are showing firm interest.

Campbell told ESPN footballnet: "I have been approached by several clubs, and yes, it is correct to say that Newcastle are one of them."

He added: "People might be surprised to hear me say that I would be very interested in a move there, but I have my reasons. Also, Newcastle are a big club and could be heading back to the Premier League. It appeals."

  2. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, don't know what to think about this one. It is tricky. In a way i do agree with 7th Heaven, maybe give him a trial. I'd only have him here till the end of the season though to see how he performs. But his age puts me off. But i think SCOTT is spot on, i have been saying for years i wish we'd invest in young hungry talent. I don't mind older experienced, or the odd expensive brilliant player of the moment as both have the ability to inspire the younger lads coming through the ranks.
I'd rather we build up a good strong squad before we venture back into the prem. At the way things are we would struggle with immediate promotion. Maybe am wrong or looking at it negatively but it's just how i feel looking at our performances of late.

  5. Looking at the comments below there seems to be a mixed reaction to Sol Campbell coming to the Toon which is understandable given the bad press he has had lately. Having watched a lot of games this season the standard of football in the Championship is poor compared to the Premiership and a massive gulf exists between the two leagues. Remember the team we have now has changed only very slightly in terms of new recruits, however we have lost a lot of so called quality players and we are top of the league, that speaks volumes as to how poor this league actually is. There are few players in United's squad who would get a start in a Premiership team and I think Campbell would be a good signing on a pay as you play basis given his age and experience at the top level. If he proves his worth then give him a 12 month rolling contract. Campbell would bring stability to our defence and help us when we do return to the Premiership next season. One other reason that Campbell wants to play for the Toon is that he has just purchased a country mansion near Ponteland and his girlfreind is a Geordie !!

  6. Another joke in the Ashley pantomone - seems that apart from lining his pockets Campbell has an addiction clubs who play in black and white first Notts County, then W Brom now NUFC -- You couldn't make it up could you?

  7. CAMPBELL WILL BE A GREAT SIGNING FOR US, YES HE IS NOCKING ON A LITTLE BUT HE HAS DRIVE AND IS STILL HUNGRY FOR THE GAME, MORE THAN CAN BE SAID FOR SOME WE HAVE,
MAYBE HE WILL SHAME THOSE WE HAVE NOW INTO ACTUALLY WANTING TO PLAY INSTEAD OF JUST TURNING OUT AND FOLLOWING THE BALL AROUND, HE IS A GREAT PLAYER,

  8. He`s past it and another has-been. The Toon does not him. He snubbed the Toon when he had the chance to join and went to Notts and now it`s all gone bad for him he`s looking for a another easy wage packet.

  10. not for me thank's we need young hungry talent , not merc's just coming for the cash and a bit of limelight . anyway hasn't he just walked out on one contract.....

From SCOTT, on Fri 30 Oct 5:20PM
  11. But do we really need another over the hill has been who has just walked out on a contract? Players like this have managed to bring NUFC down quite nicely over the past few years, so I hope not.
