Big man steps up: Anthony Joshua faced the scrap of his life as he stepped into the ring for the third round of his super-heavyweight final against Roberto Cammarelle, knowing he needed to make up a three-point deficit. But he was equal to it: time and again he found a way through his opponent's guard to punch the Italian in the face, and Britain was left celebrating its 29th and final gold medal.

WASTED PARTY INVITATION
Great Britain's Liam Killeen had high hopes of clinching a medal on the final day in the mountain bike cross-country, but it wasn't just his dreams that ended up getting broken: he crashed on the second lap of the race and ended up fracturing his ankle. Instead of spending the evening larging it at the closing ceremony after-parties with a medal round his neck, he will be will be laid up in a hospital bed.
LOOKING ON THE BRIGHT SIDE
Poor old Lee Merrien: the British marathon entrant finished the race in a time (2:17) that would have made Paula Radcliffe blush, coming 30th in the process. But in the true British spirit he kept his stiff upper lip, and politely said thanks for having me: "I knew it was going to be good, but it was better than anticipated. My ears were ringing. No British athlete will experience anything like this again."
DREAM TEAM ENDS HOPES OF EQUIPO DE SUEÑOS
If anyone could upset the USA in the basketball final it would have been the talented giants lining up for Spain, but after a nailbiting opening the hot favourites did just enough to stay clear and win 107-100 to collect their 46th and final gold of the Games.
NO NEED TO HEAD TO THE DOLE OFFICE YET
Games chief Seb Coe might not be everyone's cup of tea, but you'd have thought he'd have earned a long and comfy retirement after running a fabulous London 2012. No such luck: David Cameron has shunted him into a new job as 'legacy ambassador', which sounds to me like some sort of thankless exercise in trying to cut through masses of red tape while trying to prevent the amazing Olympic Park becoming a white elephant. Still, at least he won't have to worry about what to do now the Games are over.
HE'S GOT A POINT THERE
Dick Pound, the former head of the World Anti-Doping Agency, says it all about cheats who think they'll get away with it at the most heavily-tested sporting event in the world: "If you get caught doping at the Olympics you haven't just failed a drugs test, you've failed an IQ test."
