Today at the Olympics – Day 4

US gymnast Jordyn Wieber faces a big test after failing to reach the individual final

    DON'T MISS

The women's team gymnastics is always an Olympic highlight, the USA once again go in hot favourites to take gold. In Athens and Beijing they threw it away… surely that can't happen a third time? Their main rivals are Russia, China and Romania. If it is anything like as exciting as the men's competition, it will be a classic.

    Gymnastics - Women's Team Final - 16:30

    BIG NAMES IN ACTION

The pool continues to dominate proceedings, as Michael Phelps has a third crack at gold in the 200m butterfly. After setting an Olympic Record in her heat, Emily Seebohm bids to upset US sensation Missy Franklin in the 200m freestyle. Meanwhile, Australia's darling Stephanie Rice goes in the 200m Individual Medley

    Swimming - Finals - 19:30

    MORE ESSENTIAL VIEWING

Great Britain has never before had an Olympic volleyball team. It may never have one again. So enjoy it while it lasts, especially with a match against our sporting nemesis Australia. While minnows by global standards, the Aussies are still heavy favourites to win a match on virtual home territory at Earl's Court.

    Volleyball - Great Britain v Australia - 20:00

    WATER-COOLER TOPIC

Tom Daley received Twitter abuse about his dead father just hours after finishing fourth in the synchronised diving final with Peter Waterfield. While online abuse is common, Daley quoted his abuser in a tweet of his own. Soon the culprit was trending worldwide, and performed a humiliating u-turn admitting he was 'jealous' of Daley. It has subsequently become a police matter.

    THE LONDON 2012 VIBE

Conflicted: Delight over the gymnasts, despair over Daley. And where were those 20-plus gold medals the pundits so confidently predicted. While empty seats continue to plague the Games, London's transport system is coping well - perhaps as a result.

    FRONT PAGE OF THE DAY

Are we as desperate for a gold medal as The Sun suggests? Well, maybe we are, actually.

    LONDON WEATHER FORECAST

Dank and rainy for much of the day, brightening up in the early evening. Not much fun to be outside. Top temperature 18°C.
