Crazy footage has emerged from a woefully disorganised cycling race just outside Washington DC that miraculously saw nobody seriously hurt.
The footage comes from the Crystal Cup – a race that is open to both professional and amateurs - and one particular dangerous part of the course sees the riders loop around and back on to the same street which can see cyclists riding in opposite directions at the same time.
This is all well and good if nothing goes wrong but chaos can ensue if somebody has an accident.
That is exactly what happened in this video filmed this weekend. While watching the video it looks like the race marshal has been hit by a car in the 36-second but thankfully she was only clipped by a cyclist
However, while she lay stricken on the ground with stewards rushing to her aid – another group of cyclists were heading straight at her at 30 m/ph.
The confusion became even greater when one official started shouting 'left, left' to the approaching riders while waving his hand to the right – and one cyclist fell as he had to try and jump over the floored marshal.
The rider in question, Tim Rugg, wrote a blog about the incident and said that such an accident was to be expected.
"For years I've been saying that there would be a serious crash in this out and back section of the Crystal Cup course in the Air Force Classic and of course I fall victim," he wrote.
Lucky Rugg only suffered road rash and the marshal was treated for minor injuries. Two other people were hospitalised and the whole thing could be a blessing in disguise as calls to change the course for next year are sure to increase.
