    Fantasy Golf: Poulter heist?

The Phoenix Open this year might be sponsored by Waste Management, yet it's anything but a load of rubbish.

For golf fans in the western USA, Phoenix is one of the highlights of the entire year: this is the best-attended golf tournament anywhere in the world, with almost half a million people coming through the gates during the week - roughly double the number that attend The Open.

And of those half million people, some 90 per cent are likely to be very, very drunk, because as well as being the busiest week in golf it's also the rowdiest.

It's an event that sees inebriated fans abuse players, beer cans litter the rough and TV viewers complain about the atmopshere of debauchery.

Quite why the organisers feel the need to apologise for making a golf tournament so much fun to attend is a mystery, but nonetheless the Thunderbirds - a local rotary club-style organisation who own the event - are always at pains to point out that they raise a huge amount of money for charity.

Most famous of all is the astonishing 16th hole, a birdie opportunity par-3 that always draws the unbelievable screams from 20,000 fans packed around it - and never more so than when Tiger Woods made an ace here back in 1997:

Some players love the atmosphere, others absolutely hate it - making selecting your team a little bit easier than normal.

And top of your list should be Ian Poulter. There's nothing Poulter likes more than being the centre of attention at a big tournament, and his confidence will be sky high after his win at the WGC Accenture Match Play - so make him your man in group C.

Former champion JB Holmes is a the obvious shout in group B. He missed the cut last year, but won the tournament in 2006 and 2008 and is a solid bet to add another title in 2010.

We've picked out Geoff Ogilvy alongside Holmes, partly on the back of a solid T17 last year, but more for his good form in 2010 so far. Briny Baird and Sean O'Hair are the back-ups.

Also playing well this year is Ryan Moore, who narrowly gets the nod in group A ahead of big-hitting Bubba Watson. Both will thrive on the TPC Scottsdale layout, and both are in top form with Watson unlucky not to break his victory duck in Arizona a few weeks ago.

The current Road to Ireland group leaders are:

    Group 1: Sidgolfer - 1,257 points

    Group 2: Sergioforthopen - 1,232

    About Bunker Mentality

From the top of the golfing tree to the grubby roots of the game which bind us all together, Bunker Mentality will be there: It’ll tees up slices of news, and send them fizzing back down the neatly-trimmed fairway of opinion with more punch than a Tiger 2-iron stinger, more spin than a Mickelson wedge – and more bottle than John Daly.
