Steve Stricker almost became the first player to miss Ryder Cup play through injury in 21 years after his golf cart lost control on a practice round.
The American was on a steep slope near Medinah's 17th green when his cart played up, leading Stricker to leap from the cart as it slid sideways down the wet slope.
"I felt it going, and I decided to abandon ship," Stricker said. "I think the cart actually ended up doing about a 360 spin before it stopped.
"My caddie (Jimmy Johnson) also jumped out. My clubs were kind of all over the place, but no-one got hurt, which was good."
The last player to suffer injury at the biennial competition was Steve Pate, who cracked his ribs in a limo accident on his way to a Ryder Cup gala dinner in 1991.
He missed the Sunday singles, although the rules state that Stricker could have been replaced had any injury occurred prior to Friday's alternate shot matches.
