    Bunker Mentality

The US Ryder Cup star you can root for

Golf is hardly the most tribal of sports but patriotism does get into full swing when the Ryder Cup comes along.

This weekend we are not British, Irish, Spanish or Belgian but instead European as we look to cheer Jose Maria Olazabal's men on to victory.

However, often times the great pleasure in the Ryder Cup is not such much in seeing Europe win, but rather seeing America lose, and in the past their players have given us plenty of reasons not to like them.

That cannot be said about Brandt Snedeker though.  The American won (financially) the biggest prize in golf last weekend when he won the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup play-off bonus.

For winning the event he "only" received $1.4m but the bonus for winning golf's convoluted end of season play-off prize was a cool $10m.

That means Snedeker picked up $11.4m - that's just over £7m.

It would be easy to be jealous of Snedeker for his success if not for the fact that he plans to give a chunk of the money away to charity.

When asked if he intended to spoil himself with say… a fancy new car… after his latest pay cheque, Snedeker was refreshingly humble.

"I'm not a flashy guy. I do not need $11m," said Snedeker.

"I've had a car for four and a half years — a Yukon Denali — and it's got 24,000 miles on it. Why do I need a new car?"

Snedeker already helps charities near his native Nashville and he hinted that they, along with his family, would be the big benefactors of his victory.

"It's going to be an unbelievable thing to go through this process of being financially secure for a long period of time and looking at what we can do to help other people out with that money," he said.

"There are going to be things we can do to really help people. That's the way I look at it - I really think we can make a difference and help a lot of people out here are going to be things we can do to really help people. "I have to figure out how to help people and take care of my family.

"I've got another little boy on the way here in a month. My life is about to change drastically, not because of this money, but because I'm going to have two kids for the first time in my life.

"That is my biggest thing in my life is to make sure I'm a good father and a good dad to those kids."

    About Bunker Mentality

From the top of the golfing tree to the grubby roots of the game which bind us all together, Bunker Mentality will be there: It’ll tees up slices of news, and send them fizzing back down the neatly-trimmed fairway of opinion with more punch than a Tiger 2-iron stinger, more spin than a Mickelson wedge – and more bottle than John Daly.
