Britain's 100 metre backstroke world record holder Gemma Spofforth has set herself a new mountain to climb after failing to win a medal in the discipline at the London Olympics.

The Florida-based swimmer, fifth in Monday's final, told reporters she wanted to reach the summit of Mount Everest in the next five years.

"I think I can combine both, I think it crosses over and if you are fit out of the water you are going to be fit in the water and I don't think I am going to lose that," she said.

She said she had started climbing this year, had fallen in love with the sport and had others who

  • Britons get glimpse of ‘future of television’

Missy Franklin of the US, who took first place, starts in the women's 100m backstroke final at the Aquatics Centre (Reuters)

A lucky few Britons are getting a chance to watch Olympic broadcasts of unprecedented quality showcasing a technology that its creators are hailing "the future of television."

Japan's public broadcaster NHK is using London 2012 to test "Super Hi-Vision" TV, which offers images 16 times the resolution of existing HDTV, in a partnership with the BBC and the Games' own Olympic Broadcast Service.

The sceptics may think the claims are hyperbole but broadcasters have often used the Games to pioneer developments that seemed ambitious but soon became commonplace in households around the globe.

  • Saudi woman allowed to compete in hijab

Saudi Arabia's Wojdan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shaherkani at the opening ceremony (Reuters)

A female Saudi fighter will take part in the Olympic judo competition after being allowed to wear an Islamic headscarf, or hijab, of a specific design.

Wojdan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shaherkani is one of only two Saudi women to travel to London after the International Olympic Committee lobbied the conservative Islamic kingdom to end its refusal to send women to the Games.

But she had said she would only compete if she was allowed to wear the hijab, and judo officials refused, saying it would be dangerous.

A Saudi National Olympic Committee spokeswoman said the committee, the IOC and the

  • Sir Paul McCartney paid £1 for Olympic opening ceremony

Bono passed Paul McCartney as the world's wealthiest rock star this year, thanks to having a 2.3 percent share of Facebook. That's a cool £1 billion for the U2 frontman, leaving the former lead singer of Wings in second place with a fortune estimated at slightly over $1 billion.

So Paul McCartney needs the money, obviously. Yet his biggest gig of the year — the featured performer at the London Olympic Opening Ceremony — earned him … £1.

    From The Guardian:

Mike Oldfield, Dizzee Rascal and Emeli Sande are also among the stars who are thought to have been paid the token figure. The big names had

  • Tom Daley reacts during the synchronised 10m platform diving at London 2012 Olympics (Reuters)Tom Daley reacts during the synchronised 10m platform diving at London 2012 Olympics (Reuters)

Just a couple of hours after missing out on a medal in the 10m synchronised diving, British hope Tom Daley was receiving abuse on Twitter, including references to his late father.

18-year-old Daley, in partnership with Pete Waterfield, finished fourth in the event, having led at the halfway stage. A misjudged dive cost them their lead, and the duo could not recover.

But despite the near-miss, a defiant Daley made an example of a Twitter user who launched a sickening rant.

"After giving it my all you get idiots sending me this," Daley tweeted before linking to the message, from a user named

  • Image captured by @hfwardhouse on Twitter

There was something ever so slightly wrong with the picture as Andy Murray got his Olympic singles campaign off to a winning start at Wimbledon on Sunday.

It wasn't anything to do with Murray himself, or the ball girls, or even the unfamiliar colourings at SW19 as the tournament gets its Olympic makeover.

The mistake comes on the umpire's ladder, where the sign stenciller must have been in a bit of a hurry, and written London 2102, rather than 2012.

On closer inspection, it looks as if '2012' is a separate sticker, and has been slapped on the wrong way around, giving the unfortunate end

  • Hockey star’s Olympics may not be over despite fracturing jaw

Britain women's hockey captain Kate Walsh is recovering from surgery on a fractured jaw but could yet make a heroic return to the Olympics.

Walsh was accidentally hit by a stick in the closing stages of Team GB's 4-0 win over Japan on Sunday evening and spent the night in hospital under assessment.

She has since undergone surgery to stabilise the fracture with a plate.

"Her recovery from the operation will be monitored and her ongoing participation in the Olympic Games will be reviewed following her return to the athletes' village," read a Team GB statement.

"The injury itself is not expected

  • Bronze medallist breaks medal in shower

Felipe KitadaiOne of the judo medallists at London 2012 has been given a replacement medal after he managed to break his bronze within 24 hours of being awarded it.

Felipe Kitadai was so proud of coming third in the men's 60kg judo competition on Saturday that he couldn't bear to be parted from his medal, taking it literally everywhere with him - even keeping it on as he went for a shower the morning after his event.

And that's where disaster struck: in an attempt to avoid getting it wet, he decided to take it off briefly while he washed... but as he tried to put it to one side he promptly dropped it on the

  • Tunisia's Khalil El-Maoui

Tunisia missed a perfect chance to win their first ever Olympic weightlifting medal thanks to an astonishing arithmetic blunder by an athlete's coach.

Weightlifter Khalil El-Maoui was sitting in second place in the men's 56kg category after lifting 132kg in the snatch, but was disqualified from the competition after he failed to show up on the platform for his clean and jerk lift.

The reason? A colossal blunder by El-Maoui's coach, who mistakenly put his man down to lift a starting weight that was 10kg higher than the competition limit.

"It was a mistake," said El-Maoui. "I should have

  • Don't smile too much, Becky - it's only worth three quid

Medals of any shade are priceless to the competitors at London 2012 - but they may still be surprised to learn that some of them cost less than a sandwich from a petrol station.

The gongs given out at this year's Olympics are the largest and heaviest ever seen at a Games, measuring 8.5cm in diameter and weighing a hefty 400g - almost as much as a normal bag of sugar.

But the bronze medals - including the one won by Rebecca Adlington in the 400m freestyle on Sunday night - are worth less than £3.

The gold medals, ironically, are barely gold at all: they are, in fact, 92.5 per cent
