After playing a starring role alongside James Bond in Danny Boyle's critically acclaimed opening ceremony, Her Majesty toured the village with 150 members of the British Olympic Association as well as London 2012 chairman Lord Sebastian Coe.

The Queen was accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh as she was shown around the residential block and dining hall by BOA chairman Lord Colin Moynihan, with chef de mission Andy Hunt also present.

  • US gymnast to compete with broken toe

A broken toe will not keep McKayla Maroney from performing the enormous Amanar vault which won her the vaulting world championship in 2011. She will compete on vault during Sunday's preliminaries.

Jordyn Wieber, the U.S. all-around champ, and Gabby Douglas, the Olympic trials all-around champ, will each compete on all four events, as will team captain Aly Raisman. Newcomer Kyla Ross will perform on balance beam, uneven bars and floor exercise.

Four women compete in the preliminary rounds, but just the three highest scores will count. The preliminary round qualifies teams for the final day of

The order that players must wear "predominantly white" clothing is taking a break at the All England Club. For the first time in history, tennis players will be allowed to wear color at Wimbledon, thanks to new rules instituted specifically for the London Olympics.

Venus Williams, a triple gold medalist and five-time Wimbledon champion, is taking full advantage of the one-time exception. Venus showed up to the Olympics with red, white and blue strands in her long, flowing braids, a beautiful blend of patriotism, fashion and individuality.

  • Dog almost causes chaos in cycling

Dog almost causes chaos (photo via @jose3030)Riders at the front of the peloton early in Saturday's Olympic road race encountered an unexpected obstacle.

A large black dog on an apparent kamikaze mission ran across the road and back as the main field zoomed through Twickenham, forcing surprised riders to swerve or brake to narrowly avoid a crash.

The near-disaster was reminiscent of an incident during Stage 18 of the Tour de France last week when a runaway dog on the course knocked Belgium's Philippe Gilbert and several others off their bikes. Gilbert was so livid that the carelessness of the pet's owner could have led to an injury

  • The opening ceremony (London 2012)A Tory MP has made a grovelling climbdown after tweeting that the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games was "leftie multicultural crap".

Aidan Burley caused a storm on Twitter when he made the comment on Twitter after the main show element of the ceremony came to a close as the athletes' parade began:

"Thank God the athletes have arrived! Now we can move on from leftie multicultural crap. Bring back red arrows, Shakespeare and the Stones!" he wrote.

The tweet during the ceremony on Friday night came as one of a series of negative postings, including another reading: "The most leftie opening

  • ‘The greatest show on earth’

'London Sets The World Alight', said the Independent after seven teenage athletes were given the honour of lighting the Olympic cauldron that will burn for the duration of the Games.

The Guardian described it as a 'Night Of Wonder' on their front page while the Daily Telegraph's banner headline was 'Going For Gold'.

Britain's Queen Elizabeth declared the Games open after playing a cameo role in a dizzying ceremony designed to highlight the grandeur and eccentricities of the nation that invented modern sport.

  • Best- and worst-dressed of the London opening ceremony

Paraguay's Leryn Franco parades with her country's delegation during the opening ceremony (AFP)

Our old friend, Leryn Franco, aka the Hot Paraguayan, kicks off the list of the best- and worst-dressed delegations of the 2012 Olympic opening ceremony.

As always, our rankings our completely arbitrary. We should note that we pay special attention to national identity in this list. It's all dependent on who's wearing what. If the Americans rocked the Swedes outfit, it'd be a disaster - not as big as the Ralph Lauren scarf/beret debacle, but pretty bad. Because they're Swedes, however, thick, horizontal stripes and shorts works. They're Scandinavian. They can pull off anything! Onto the list!

  • Opening Ceremony mysteries solved

A performer playing the role of Britain's Queen Elizabeth parachutes from a helicopter (AFP)

The Opening Ceremony of London's 2012 Olympic Games has come and gone, leaving many mysteries in their wake. Here, we answer some of the top head-scratchers from Danny Boyle's incredibly British event.

Why do the announcers speak French first?

That's because French and English are the two official Olympic languages. Remember, the modern Games were founded by Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin.

If not for him, there would be no Olympics. But even if it is a requirement by the IOC that the first language should be French, it does seem to add one more confusing element to the mix.

  • Bolt getting mobbed by athletes in Olympic village

Usain Bolt has arranged a personal entourage comprising Jamaican track colleagues to shield him from the attention of other athletes in the Olympic Village.

On Thursday, Bolt was mobbed by excited Olympians when he strolled into the vast dining hall as hundreds stood to cheer and applaud the defending triple gold medalist.

Since even the biggest stars are not allowed to bring their own security into the sanctuary of the Village, Bolt has had to call upon a group of Jamaican teammates to ensure he does not face too much intrusion away from the track.

"Mr. Bolt descended on the food hall for
