  • Bells ring in the Olympic Games

Thousands of bells, big and small, rang out across Britain for three minutes as the country prepared for the London Olympics opening ceremony later.

Churches across the UK and British embassies around the world got into the spirit of the bell-ringing extravaganza, devised by artist Martin Creed as part of a 12-week programme of cultural events celebrating the arts alongside sport.

People were encouraged to ring any kind of bell -- from a church, a bicycle, a door and even a mobile phone as the harmonious ringing spread from Wales in the west to Weymouth in the south.

  • Federer the best-paid athlete at Olympic Games

Forbes have published a list of the top 20 best-paid athletes at the London Olympics - and tennis players and NBA basketball stars dominate the list.

Michael Phelps might have won eight Olympic golds in Beijing, but his $7 million earnings over the last year does not even warrant a place in the top 20 - with Usain Bolt the only non-tennis or basketball star on the list.

Forbes rankings take into account earnings and endorsements from July 2011 to July 2012, with Wimbledon champion Roger Federer just edging out Team USA basketball star LeBron James on the rich list.

    Federer has earned $54.3m

  • Judo federation orders Saudi woman to compete without hijab

Saudi Judoka Wodjan Ali Seraj Abdulrahim Shahrkhani arrives at Heathrow for the Games (AFP)

Wojdan Shaherkani, the judoka from Saudi Arabia who is one of the first women to represent her country in the Olympics, has been ordered not to wear the hijab, or head scarf, during competition. The International Judo Federation said she will compete without a head covering.

"The Saudi Arabian athlete will take part in judo and she will fight according to the principle and spirit of judo, so without a hijab," said IJF president Marius Vizer following Thursday's draw.

Any head covering in judo is considered a safety risk. Judo players, or judokas, toss their opponents. Quite often the gi, the

  • Westfield Shopping Centre in Stratford, a major gateway for visitors to the London 2012 Olympic Park (Reuters)

The Westfield shopping centre in Stratford is located next to the Olympic athletes' village. To greet these international champions to this orgy of commerce, Westfield placed welcome banners in different languages throughout the complex and on staff members' uniforms.

    For example, when Arabic athletes and tourists entered the mall, they were saluted with banners that read "N O D N O L O T E M O C L E W" in their native language.

Which is, in fact, gibberish; they're supposed to read "WELCOME TO LONDON." Rather than, you know, act as an Arabic eye chart.

Westfield said on Thursday that it

  • Pregnant shooter is in London, and she’s very pregnant

Pregnant Malaysian shooter Nur Suryani Mohamed Taibi pictured at the 36th Southeast Asian Shooting Championship 2012 (Reuters)

Malaysia's pregnant shooter, Nur Suryani Mohamed Taibi, has made the trip to London and will compete in next week's 10m rifle event, just one month before she's due to give birth to a baby girl. She's not the first pregnant Olympian in history, but at 34 weeks is believed to be the furthest along.

The 29-year-old qualified for the Games at the Asian Shooting Championships in January, days after finding out she was pregnant. At the time, she had hoped her health would allow her to compete in London. So far so good.

Doctors say Nur Suryani is fine to compete. One of the few concessions she'll

  • Seven things to look out for at the Opening Ceremony

Paul McCartney performs during the Diamond Jubilee concert in front of Buckingham Palace in London (Reuters)

    1. Hail Britannia - The Opening Ceremony is heavy on real-life Britain. Nods to the industrial revolution, nursing and other stages of British history are supposedly included. If there's not an inflatable representation of fish and chips, it would be a minor upset.

    2. #savethesurprise - Danny Boyle's ambitious anti-spoiler social media plan has worked wonders during two dress rehearsals this week. A quick search on Twitter reveals that attendees, with the proper motivation, are just as invested in keeping a secret as they are in revealing one. Unless you really search for them, spoilers have

  • Where does the London Olympic torch sleep at night?

England football legend Gordon Banks carries the flame (Reuters)

Each day of the Olympic torch relay features hundreds of honourees lugging the 800-gram aluminium icon from one London neighbourhood to the next. The relays begin just past 9 a.m. and end in the evening, before the next relay team starts the journey anew the following morning.

But where, exactly, does the Olympic torch sleep at night?

"It's a secret. It will go to a location within the community, where the relay team stays. We don't give away the location," said David Paul of the London 2012 press office.

"We obviously work very hard to create this fantastic illusion around the flame. The

  • Olympic pin fever hits London

Pins collected by Linda Li of Guangzhou, China, are displayted on her purse outside the Olympic Village (Reuters)

The Games have not started yet, but trading from the far corners of the earth in Olympic pins of every shape and size is already fast and furious at the entrance to London 2012.

Men, women and youngsters from Canada, China, Greece, the United States and elsewhere have already begun gathering at the gates to the Olympic Park to take part in a collecting obsession that stretches back decades for some.

Ken Davids and his brother Harvey hover between the gates of the Olympic Park for athletes and journalists with hopes of securing the special enamel and metal decorative pins designed for news

  • Olympic organisers have been forced to apologise for another gaffe after Welsh footballer Joe Allen was listed as English in the programme for Team GB's first match against Senegal at Old Trafford.

The mistake comes less than 24 hours after the North Korean women's footballers walked off the pitch after the South Korea flag was mistakenly displayed before their opening match with Colombia, delaying the kick-off by over an hour.

Allen is one of five Welsh players in Stuart Pearce's 18-man squad for the Olympic Games.

"I'm a massive Usain Bolt fan," said Staffordshire farmer Robinson.

"With the Games coming to London this year, I wanted to create an amazing tribute to an amazing athlete.

"When I was planning the maze I had a dream that Bolt ran the 100m in a record time.
