Oval Talk

France favourites for Six Nations

These are Oval Talk's predictions for the Six Nations, which starts this weekend with England an unknown quantity and France favourites to win the title.

FRANCE

Saint-Andre with the Six Nations trophyFor Oval Talk, Les Bleus are the favourites to win this year's tournament. They still have their whole World Cup squad available and with their new coach Philippe Saint-Andre vowing to end France's inconsistent streak, they are the frontrunners.

Although France have lost to the likes of Italy and Tonga in the last 12 months, their recent Six Nations record is impeccable. In the last decade they have won five championships, including three Grand Slams.

They play Ireland and England at the Stade de France and it could well be the case that the title is decided before France go to Cardiff to face Wales on the last day of the championship.

With the likes of Morgan Parra, Dimitri Yachvilli and Francois Trinh-Duc, they probably have the most feared back line in the tournament.

PREDICTION: 1st

IRELAND
O'Connell is key to Ireland's chancesIreland made all the headlines when they beat Australia in the group stage of the World Cup only to lose to an excellent Wales team in the quarter-finals. They will be determined to make a big impression even without their talismanic No.13 Brian O'Driscoll, who is sidelined with nerve damage.

With Paul O'Connell leading the side which has a back row of Jamie Heaslip, Sean O'Brien and Stephen Ferris, one of the best in world rugby, they are primed for a push for the championship.

The biggest game of the tournament will be Ireland's match against France, with the winners likely to go on and win the title.

PREDICTION: 2nd

WALES

They won many plaudits for their performances at the World Cup, but fell short in the big games against South Africa, France and Australia. Wales have also lost their inspirational winger Shane Williams to retirement and there are doubts over the fitness of Rhys Priestland and Jamie Roberts, not to mention Gethin Jenkins and Alun Wyn Jones, who are already out.

George North in action

There are several question marks over Wales - and a lot rests on the young shoulders of George North. Warren Gatland is the most experienced coach in the championship and he will need to use all of it to help Wales finish any higher than mid-table.

PREDICITON: 3rd

ENGLAND
Who knows how England are going to do this year as they defend the title? Stuart Lancaster has named nearly half a squad of uncapped players. They will either sink or swim - and their first match against Scotland is a baptism of fire. England have not won at Murrayfield since 2004 and it will be at least a decade before they do so again. This will be a real test for new captain Chris Robshaw.

Lancaster's team also have to play away to France, and that will be a gargantuan task. England might cause some surprises with their new mixture of ball carriers and big hitters, but this tournament has come too soon for the new-look side.

PREDICTION: 4th

A Scotland fan at Murrayfield

SCOTLAND
Other than Scotland's opening game against England, in which they will give absolutely everything to beat the auld enemy, Andy Robinson's team will do nothing.

Under Robinson, Scotland have won three and lost 11 of their 15 matches in the Six Nations. Frankly, that just is not good enough. Scotland are a team lacking confidence and ability and will finish towards the bottom yet again.

PREDICTION: 5th

ITALY
It is safe to say that the Azzurri will not win the Six Nations. But with Jacques Brunel having replaced Nick Mallett as coach, Italy have certainly become more ambitious. The former Perpignan coach has set his team the challenge of being in a position to win the Six Nations in the next two or three years and become one of the top six nations in the world.

But for this championship, at least, Italy should focus on winning two games - like they did in 2007, when they beat Scotland and Wales. Avoiding the wooden spoon must be their main objective; anything more than that will be a bonus.

PREDICTION: 6th

Arrogant? No chance! U may get the odd bird who knows nothing saying we are world beaters but anyone whos followed welsh rugby for the last 25 years will know we never have 2 good seasons on the bounce! championship in 94 - whitewash in 95. 10 wins in 99 - near bottom in 2000, grandslam in 05 - meltdown in 06, grandslam in 08 - average at best 09. Had a good world cup so i expect we will have a pretty average 6 nations especially with the injuries.
What i will say is that alot is decided on opening weekend. If you get off to a win your confidence is up and u start to aim for the title. If you lose u are playing catch up in what is a short competition. I predict a scotland, ireland, and france win this weekend so they will be the title contenders - probably with scotland tailing off.
What we as wales fans do have tho is eternal optimism - and i always believe we CAN win! that doesnt mean i think we WILL win

dont really appreciate the comments on scotland actually, very unfair. If you notice both of the pro clubs have done very well in europe this year, each with a core squad of young scottish players. I am in no way saying Scotland are in contention for the championship, but they deserve a little more than what you have wriiten i believe.

They may beat Italy,or maybe they won't. They won't beat anyone else though.

Cant see Ireland beat France in Paris, its never been a happy hunting ground for us but can see us win the rest . France could well lose in Wales (who have score to settle) but win the rest, so the winner could come down to try/points difference. Wales have a problem in that they seem to be short a lot of players from the world cup so i think 3rd is their best target. England could be in for a rough time with a very inexperienced team, they could even lose to Italy as it will be only their second game together, i cant see them do well. Italy and Scotland fighting for bottom.

I really don't see France as favourites myself. They were a very fortunate side to have made the final at the RWC after losing games in the group stages and were equally as lucky to beat Wales. I would have thought solely on performance Wales must be in the running. Looking at the form of the Irish clubs in Europe they must also be in with a shout if they can translate that into international form. As an Englishman I would like to think everything will click and we will retain the 6 Nations but being realistic I think this year will be about transition and can live with that while we bed in new players. We cannot look upon Scotland as an easy touch either even though I doubt whether they have enough apart from the usual Scot's fire to head the pack.

As a Scot, much as I'd like to hope differently, I can't argue with this assessment.
Robinson has done good work, but despite having a fairly strong squad we've flattered to decieve.
If we wind up fighting for the Spoon again I think he'll be out.
Hopefully we can steal Nick Mallett from under English noses !

Could go either way for England. New coach, new era, things to prove. Couple of good performances will see them challenge for the title. I

Ireland are struggling a little to find a balance, the loss of BOD will be a big blow, as much as us losing Mossie.

Wales, I dunno, you guys are great, you had a fantastic WC, but you do sometimes hit the self destruct button.

IMHO, the final table will be

    France,
    Wales,
    England,
    Ireland,
    Scotland,
    Italy.

I would agree with France as favorites & Italy for the wooden spoon but in between????? Yes Ireland have looked strong, but dont seem to get the consistancy needed, Wales have a fair few injuries, England-who knows & Scotland, well if they get a opening day victory agianst us then it may spur them onto further good performances.

Looking forward to a cracker of a 6N

It is a very favorable year for France , 3 games at home including England and Ireland. Saint Andre seem to have brought more logic in the selection (no more players playing out of position...), it is a new era and considering the reservoir of top players in France (and the mess England still is) I can only see Ireland to spoil the Bleu party !

So much depends on the first game between Ireland and Wales. I think Ireland will win that but lose to france in paris. Then france will lose to wales in cardiff. Im afraid the other three are purely also rans. With the Scots just edging the english into 5th.

I do not know about France first. Not a great world cup. Lost two pool matches and should have been beaten by England. I think 1st is a bit high. England, Italy, who knows anything could happen. Wales Ireland in the top 3. I think one will be 1st. Scotland have a great chance against a new England, and maybe Italy. Cant see them doing much more than that, I think if Scotland do not beat England its the wooden spoon.

"should have been beaten by England"

Watch the game and yo'll see that England were completly outperformed by France and deserved to lose.

Comment @ Peter C • Brighton, England - well said mate - - Wales are indeed arrogant, and their supporters bigoted. Remember the 6 Nations last year when the Welsh rabble supporters booed God Save The Queen prior to the game?
They have also done that numerous times in other years.
I wish our English supporters would also boo the British National anthem. We might then get one dedicated to England, like 'Jerusalem' which has received more votes than any other anthem including the GSOGQ dirge. This hangover from empire is frankly an embarrassment.

Wales, I dunno, you guys are great, you had a fantastic WC

How did the proven homosexual welsh players have a great world cup? They only beat one decent team. Choked badly in three games. Cheated to get through the group stages by receiving "fixture assistance" against Samoa and some fabulously one-sided refereeing in another and came 4th. That ain't a great world cup. That's proof of inadequacy.

    2003.

About Oval Talk

Rugby has to fight for its voice in the football-obsessed world of British sport, but thankfully there are enough fans of the oval ball to warrant a weekly look at issues affecting the game. Oval Talk cannot promise the same level of scurrilous tittle-tattle and unfounded rumour that emerges daily from football columns, but - casting off its Barbour and adopting the refreshing candour of an Aussie commentator – it can bring you the kind of debate that would have had old farts at HQ spluttering into their Fullers.
