    Women

Like the French Open, Wimbledon confirmed the late blooming of an old generation.

We were expecting the young talent to mark the tournament while in reality we had
more experienced players, who are mature enough to make sure they produced the best tennis of their lives.

Sam Stosur, Francesca Schiavone and Vera Zvonareva have all reached the final of a Grand Slam for the first time this season, which is an excellent accomplishment.

At the same time Victoria Azarenka, Caroline Wozniacki and Agnieszka Radwanska have failed to deliver the game we were expecting from them.

    They are all 21 or

  • The older generation blooms

It's a major surprise not to have any new names in the semi-finals of a Grand Slam.

It is all the more surprising to not have newcomers except for Petra Kvitova.

We could have imagined seeing Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Caroline Wozniacki, Melanie Oudin, Dominika Cibulkova, Sorana Cirstea, Victoria Azarenka or Yanina Wickmayer at this stage.

All these players are young, full of talent and ambitious. Some of them should reach the semi-finals or final of a Grand Slam in the years to come.

However, they are not ready yet while older players profited from vacant spots let by the once-retired stars

  • Week one wrap-up: Fed back to business

We take a look at who's up, who's down and what to look forward to after week one of Wimbledon.

Federer to return to his best

All the favorites are through to the second week: Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal headline the field as well as Andy Roddick, Novak Djokovic, Robin Sodlering, Lleyton Hewitt, Tomas Berdych and home favourite Andy Murray.

We have an outstanding Wimbledon with a lot of quality matches.
The man from Switzerland seems to have the best chance.

Even though Berdych - who might be his next opponent - beat him in Miami earlier this year,
Roger seems to be getting his game

  • Falla battle good for Federer

It has been a long time since we witnessed Roger Federer being forced to work hard in the first round of a Grand Slam. He was on the brink of defeat after being led by two sets to love, and down 0-40 at 4-4 in the third.

Then he trailed by two sets to one and a break in the fourth set with Alejandro Falla able to serve for the match at 5-4.

It is not an overstatement to say the man from Switzerland was an inch from flying home. But at the end of the day, Roger remains the winner.

Even if the margin between winning and losing was as thin as ever, he managed to find a way to do it. He is still

  • Men’s singles favourites and outsiders

Few key factors are required in order to play well on the Wimbledon grass, although some players have issues with the specifics of the surface.

The ones who manage to produce swing from it have a chance of winning the tournament: big servers like Roddick, and the ones keen on slicing their serve like Feliciano Lopez.

Plus the great counter-punchers who move well, such as Hewitt, can triumph; not to mention those who can hit the ball flat like Berdych, perhaps a surprise choice for many people.

    The favourites

As world number two - and because his focus is always on the Grand
