Paul Parker

Stuart Pearce is not a racist

Stuart Pearce found himself on the front page of the newspapersI could not help but find the front pages of some of Friday's newspapers anything other than embarrassing.

Stuart Pearce has only just been named as England's caretaker manager, and already the press have dredged up some story from years ago in an attempt to discredit him.

I just cannot understand this attitude of the British media that as soon as someone is elevated to sufficiently high office they are fair game. Even if there is nothing new to smear a person's name with, they will happily trawl through a person's past just to get anything on them.

That is what has happened here with an alleged incident from 18 years ago involving Pearce and Paul Ince during a game between Manchester United and Nottingham Forest.

I was playing at United at the time, although not in this match, and I can honestly say I do not remember the incident in question. However, if something was said and Stuart apologised to Paul afterwards - as was reported at the time - and no one felt the need to take it any further then we should just leave it where it belongs, in the past.

What is the use of bringing something like this up and claiming it is 'news' when there is nothing new about it? It just goes to show that certain members of the press will chase a shocking headline at any cost, even if there is no foundation for it.

I played with Stuart for England many times and got to know him well, and I genuinely believe there is absolutely no way he is racist. If he did make any abusive comments to Paul, as was alleged at the time, I would say they may have come out of ignorance at that point, rather than bigotry. I am sure that as a highly respected member of the football community he would not dream of making any such comments now.

Ignorance was certainly the root of most of the racist remarks I had directed at me during my time as a player. Opponents would look for anything to rile you up, and the odd person would use the colour of your skin to do so. It was not acceptable that it went on even back then. At least we now live in a time where that sort of behaviour is roundly condemned and punished so much more.

I recall an incident during one match playing for England when we were getting ready to defend a corner. One of the opposition said something to Des Walker, something racist. The first person to come over and stick up for Des was Stuart. The pair had been team-mates at Forest and were close friends, and Pearce let this guy have it. I remember that the corner was held up for quite a while as he let this guy know exactly what he thought of him for saying what he said.

It may be a clichéd and flawed defence of someone accused of racism to say something along the lines of "some of my best friends are black", but that is not why I bring that story up. I do so because it shows Pearce for the kind of man he is, a leader of men who will do anything for his team-mates.

Pearce may not bring with him a wealth of experience at the top level of management or a high degree of tactical nous like Fabio Capello, but he will bring something that the Italian never came close to doing.

What England's players need more than anything right now is a man in front of them with a true passion for the job, and who can transfer that on to the team. Pearce will not be one to suffer fools gladly, and I am sure he will only pick those players who he believes fully have their hearts and minds on the job.

It may only be a one-off, but Pearce has earned the right to take his seat in the dugout at Wembley, no matter what anyone says.

In the heat of a battle, sometimes you casually grope for words to annoy and offend - it might be fat, it might be ginger, it might be skin colour etc ... and it is just that, offensive remarks made in the heat of a battle ... we all know Pearcey's not a racist

Totally agree .... the real ignorant people are those who don't understand what real racial predjudice is...a few insulting words aren't racial predjudice they're just sticks and stones stuff said by people limited in poise and intellect..and yes they should be reprimanded but the way Suarez and Terry have been vilified by rival fans and the press you'd think they'd committed genocide.

For all the so called fans on here of LFC. and MUFC who feel that it endorses they're credentials as real die hard fans to use language like scumbags and other denigrating remarks actually make you sound like the type of supporter these clubs could do without but perhaps it's the lack of education that prevents you from discussing the topic like civil human beings, everyone has a view and is entitled to voice it but how much better to discuss and debate in a friendly way, something that is lacking on here, some seem to think the louder they shout makes their view right.

The reason why the press do what they do is because it is not The British Press and has not been for many years. It is run by Australians and they started being foul and sniping at their own sportsmen years before it came normal to do so here but it came from them.
Stuart Pearce deserve the job full time based on his success with the under 21's and also because he has served his apprenticeship and jumped through all the hoops he was told to by ther FA. If I were him and did not get a chance at the job, and I was financially secure, I would tell the FA where to stuff it.

i am black and and an african and i feel that this racist accusations is getting out of control now. racism is being misrepresented in uk FFS!!! in Terry's case for instance, do i think he's racist, absolutely not. it was a pitch words that happenes every day in the football world. a friend in work calls me black man, i call him white man, does it make us racist? i am a black man but only date white women, does it make me racist?

I agree, this is what i've been saying for years. This race issue isnt driven by black people but by ignorant PC middle class white people. It is actually creating racism on all sides by trying to polarise people. What happened with Terry and Suarez is just PEOPLE having an ARGUMENT. And when the PC liberal brigade start highlighting only ONE side of things all the time, it only CREATES divides and fosters resentment in the other side. How can we claim to have racial equality when you can go to prison for insulting a black person but not a ginger person??
This whole racism hysteria is only making black people a target for GENUINE RACISTS. If Anton Ferdinand comes to harm from some idiot, the blood will be on the FA's hands. They are only using the racism issue to get back at Blatter.

The problem in UK is that they created racism and then turn around to fight it. Take for instance a war break out in LIBYA and the UK govt sent a ship to rescue their citizens, if u don't have a UK passport u left to die in the battle field because for not being a UK citizen you don't belong to human race. What do u call that ? It happens in every aspect of our lives, just because footballers entertain us day in day out all eyes are always on them to find fault. Look at paul parkar playing double standard. I am a black man but i wouldn't accept parkar into my fold as a fellow black man.

Mr parker! you sir are a bigger hypocrite than fergie! of pearce; "if he said it he said it out of ignorance back then" i believe were your words? read the paul parker article on suarez! "ignorance is no excuse! he has been over here long enough to know that this is not acceptable!" a man not from this country, not with a full grasp of our culture who doesn't have an excuse? im not making excuses, paul parker has done it for every liverpool fzn in the land :-)

Typical pool fan as of late. Reading sections that suit in articles and reports. Parker also says "It was not acceptable that it went on even back then. At least we now live in a time where that sort of behaviour is roundly condemned and punished so much more."
And to top it off, Evra tried to shake hands today but Suarez refused. Proof that Suarez is nothing but a scumbag.
    • gareth 3 months ago
typical fergie answer! hypocrytical! schmeachel was accused of racism! did fergie stand by him? yes! why did he get away with it? because he didn't admit what he said! suarez did! you have contradicted yourself with that sentence! "it was not acceptable even back then!" but it's ok because pearce isn't racist he was as the article clearly says above "it was more ignorance" which he also clearly says in the story about suarez "ignorance is no excuse" Evra was as much to blame for today as suarez was! he wasn't looking at him during the hand shake! he was looking at the next players hand and thats the only reason he noticed he hadn't shook his hand!!! suarez should have shook his hand and this whole thing could have been delt with better but the paper are bringing people like you to the fore to spout some of the most racist and boring bull s* *t i have ever heard!!!

Hey come on Paul you aught to know that the press are the lowest form of any people on the planet. they will smeer people just for the hell of it to sell there papers, the fact that what they produce is a pack of lies is niether here or their. more aspecailly the tabaloids, cheap trashy papers who only exsist because of the scandel theyt try to portray
  • Radge2def  •  3 months ago
I just dont think you can be a racist by words alone. Its your actions that make you a racist. You can use racist words but until you actually go out of your way to abuse, keep down, pressure, humiliate another because of their skin colour then its all just sticks and stones
  • Dave T  •  Liverpool, England  •  3 months ago
Wow, I have never seen such double standards be allowed to be published before. Do you not remember a few weeks back calling Luis Suarez a racist for the exact same thing, Parker? It works both ways mate, if Pearce isn't a racist - which, I agree with you, he probably isn't - then neither is Suarez. Uttering a single word or phrase that offends a person of another race or creed does not make you a racist but then I guess your stance on that depends on whether your mate is involved, eh? Get yourself sorted out.

dragging uo something from history is a sad reflection on todays press they are so desperate to give rewdknap the job nothing will stop them smearing any other candidate but before you lot get carried away on the redknap bandwagon take a look at what he has actually one as a manager one lucky fa cup win does not make him the best manager for englan his only european trip was abject failure as was his time managing southampton he reminds me of that great british boxer joe bugner looks great in the media but when it comes to proving how good he is he runs away with the squad he inherited at spurs they should be where they are he has not signed a great player the best was pienarr and he has gone back to everton and probably the best manager in the country just compare his acheivments with redknapp and he never has money available to sign world class players but still his teams consistantly perform
