  • Racist abuse poisons Italian game

Milan's Kevin Prince Boateng and Mario Balotelli

A couple of years ago, Milan's yellow-tied chief executive Adriano Galliani lamented what had become of Serie A. "It's like with theatres and restaurants," he told the pink pages of La Gazzetta dello Sport. "There are beautiful theatres and ugly ones, luxury restaurants and pizzerias."

That comment of his came to mind once again when reading the columns of one of Italy's great sportswriters, Gianni Mura, in La Repubblica on Monday morning. "Ask for the bill, get up and leave," he wrote. The plate he'd been served the night before, billed on the menu as a feast of football between Milan and

  • Drogba hits back at banana-waving fan with evolution pic

Galatasaray striker Didier Drogba hit back at a Fenerbahce fan who waved a banana towards him and team mate Emmanuel Eboue during the weekend's league encounter by highlighting some home truths about racism.

Ivory Coast players Eboue and Drogba, who was instrumental in Chelsea's run to the Champions League title last season, were heckled during Sunday's 2-1 league win by Fenerbahce in the high-octane encounter.

A Fenerbahce fan was stabbed to death and more than 100 fans were detained following Turkey's most popular derby.

Drogba, whose Galatasaray team have already secured the Turkish

  • Europe looks an unlikely home for Rooney

Wayne Rooney, Manchester UnitedWayne Rooney, Manchester United

Once the golden boy of England and Manchester United, Wayne Rooney has undoubtedly reached something of a crossroads in his career.

Booed by his own fans as England endured a miserable World Cup in 2010, and booed again as United took to the streets of Manchester on Monday to celebrate winning this season's Premier League crown.

Without question, he remains a first choice for Roy Hodgson when it comes to leading the line with the national team, but that surely says more about the paucity of talent that England can call upon, as his recent goal scoring record for the three Lions is not what

  • The last few weeks have been marred by speculation surrounding the future of the coach and by on-field disciplinary problems, but Paris Saint-Germain finally won the Ligue 1 title on Sunday and there is no doubt that they are worthy champions.

PSG today claimed they had rejected a bid by Real Madrid to hire coach Carlo Ancelotti as the Spanish champions apparently seek to try and replace the departing Jose Mourinho, but all this speculation should not be allowed to undermine what has been such a poignant season in the French capital.

Ancelotti's side had stumbled once with the finish line in

  • European team of the week: Phenomenal Frank

Frank Lampard gets top billing in our European Team of the Week after his double at Aston Villa made him the highest scorer in the club's history. Daniel Sturridge is the only other Premier League player in the side after his hat-trick against Fulham.

Elsewhere, it's a side short on big names, with only Philipp Lahm bringing star power to the back four.

There are no players from La Liga and a quartet from Ligue 1, led by Marseille's Andre Ayew.

  • European Match of the Weekend: Porto v Benfica

Porto v Benfica: Estadio do Dragao, May 11, 20:30

Battle-weary Benfica know their season lies in the balance between memorable and disappointing when they walk on to the hostile Dragao stadium pitch for the likely title-decider against Porto on Saturday.

The fierce rivals, two points apart and both undefeated in the Portuguese championship, have been neck-and-neck all year, upping the stakes for the 'Classico' which has become the crunch moment of the season.

While Benfica lead and could be crowned champions if they win, Porto have the emotional and physical edge with home advantage and

    Werder Bremen: 14th, 33pts

Five minutes is a long time in football. Ask Werder Bremen. Last Saturday, with just five minutes to play, Thomas Schaaf's men were leading 2-0 against Hoffenheim, another relegation-threatened side. The Green and Whites just had to hold on until the final whistle to all but guarantee their safety. Victory would have given them a five-point lead over Fortuna Dusseldorf and Augsburg and an eight-point lead over Hoffenheim. Instead, typical of their underwhelming season, Werder

  • Spanish football’s harsh reality check

Spanish football is a wounded beast.

The Champions League semi-final hammerings suffered by Barcelona and Real Madrid brought a predictable rash of ill-judged opinion about how the Spanish hegemony is over.

It’s not true. Both clubs will be among the strongest in world football next season. They’ll spend big in the summer because they can afford to.

Barça will be supplemented by a couple of players from their youth system. That hasn’t turned rotten just because the first team were beaten 7-0 on aggregate by Bayern Munich, but Spanish football is right to feel threatened – and not just at first

  • Klose enters the territory of Lazio legends

As his Bologna players traipsed back into the away dressing room of the Stadio Olimpico, their pride hurting after a humiliating 6-0 defeat to Lazio, the club's heaviest since 1991, coach Stefano Pioli wasn't angry. Well, maybe just a little. His prevailing emotion, as became clear in his post-match press conference, was empathy.

Pioli had been in this position more or less before. He knew what they were going through.

He felt their pain. "As a coach I have never lost 6-0 but as a player," he explained. "I did even worse, losing 8-2. I even got sent off.

"Would you like to know where it
