Golden girl can carry off Golden Slam

Victoria Azarenka is starting to fulfil early promise

The odds of Victoria Azarenka winning all four majors after her success at the Australian Open were around 33/1. It is a definite possibility.

As it stands at the moment, I could see her winning Wimbledon and the US Open. The question mark would come on the clay of Roland Garros at the French Open, but winning any major depends on the form of the player rather than the surface.

From what we've seen, she is the kind of woman who doesn't lose focus. There is a chance she could win the lot this season.

I think Petra Kvitova at her best could stop her. Kvitova at her best beats Azarenka at her best, but I'm not convinced she has the staying power to win seven matches in a row.

I know it happened at Wimbledon last year when she was fantastic - then it didn't happen at all for part of the season - then she returned to form at the WTA Championships. If I was a betting man, I would be wary of putting money on Kvitova.

I think she is more reliable than she was, but her 'B game' isn't as good as Azarenka's 'A game'.

I think you can more or less guarantee Azarenka is going to be pretty near her 'A game' wherever and whenever she wants it.

That is how I see it. You don't know if Serena Williams is back to her best, but she would be in there as well as a real challenger at her peak levels.

I think we've also seen that Maria Sharapova doesn't really have the weapons now. The serve is still fragile. She would win another Grand Slam if things weren't going so well for Azarenka and Kvitova. And if Serena Williams wasn't there.

For me, Sharapova is just off the pace at the very top and I see these Grand Slams being contested by three women. There is every chance of Azarenka being in every final this year. She could win every final this year.

If she wins Wimbledon, why doesn't she win the Olympics? It would be the same court, same surface and she has already intimated that the Olympics is her main focus this year. A Golden Slam is certainly on the cards.

Such a feat is unique in tennis. It shows you the way things are shifting in the women's game. I'm not saying it will happen, but there is a chance it could happen.

The only person who could stop her at Wimbledon and the US Open is Petra and Serena. Serena was the last person to dominate the game, but Azarenka has the equipment to enjoy similar moments.

There is no doubt that Serena has been the dominant factor over the past decade and more. She has won 13 Slams, and there could have been six or seven more without the injuries.

In many ways, the comparison between Novak Djokovic and Azarenka is a natural one. Djokovic went 41 matches unbeaten last season. Azarenka is on a run of 17 wins this season. They seem to share a similar focus.

In the past you have had Djokovic suffering mysterious injuries. The jury is still out on whether or not he will go back to being that type of person. I don't think the same can be said for Azarenka.

I think Azarenka is a fiercely driven person. It is incredible to think she was thinking of retirement a year or so ago.

Back then, she was suffering intense frustration because here was someone who was destined to be a star. She was the world's number one junior. It just took her longer than she expected for that switch to be flicked on, but there is real belief in her game.

After winning in Australia, she has gone onwards and upwards - she could go on a run that rivals Djokovic last year.

It will require a supreme effort from someone to stop her.

Reed continues to talk down Kvitova, which is folly. For the record Kvitova has beaten Azarenka in their last 4 encounters.

I have lost any respect I had for Simon when he constantly gets his predictions wrong...Victoria was the form player going into the Australian Open yet he FAILED to even mention her in his predictions...To me he just jumps on the bandwagon as soon as any player gets a bit of success...He also lets his heart rule his head when he makes predictions..If I was a betting man I would look to who he predicts and go against it!!

Ok, now he cursed Azarenka too! Last time he wrote something good about her she was injured and out of form for almost one year. She was even considering to quit. Thanks Simon Reed...

While Azarenka is playing very well at the moment it has to be said that she hasn't faced much competition. In AO final Sharapova played well belkow her best, in Doha Stosur played well below her best. Talking Azarenka up as if she'll win all Grand slams this year is ridiculous! Before AO SF the exact same things were being said about Kvitova! Personally I hope Azarenka loses a match soon - will be interesting to see if she reverts to type when things not going her way. Also, would be nice to watch a match where you don't have to turn volume down because of incessant shrieking!!

Clijsters can aswell win Wimbledon, the US Open or the olympics, RG will be harder, but still: she did play the finals twice !

here we go again. Simon Reed's expertise. Henin couldnt do it, Hingis or Clijsters couldnt do it. Serena could! She won all 4 in a row, to compare Azarenka (as much as i like her aggressive style of play) to any of those players is a bit far fetched. This is coming from the same guy that's written off Fed and Nadal about a dozen times between them! haha #$%$

Simon`s opinion of all tennis players is on a par with the other millions who watch a lot of tennis matches and like them he is entitled to say what he thinks but does not know. Even professional coaches like myself who have coached players for fifty odd years can get it wrong but to say that some one will or will not win this that or the other is always open to ridicule. I could givee my professional opinion on Andy Murray, which I have done for the past 3 years - that is that he will win a Grand Slam. My opinion has not altered because he has always had it in him but it hasn`t happened yet because of the high standard of the other top players. Neverthe less he can still achieve his goal. Of course Azerenko could win more Grand Slams - Anybody can say that.
You have to take Simon` reports and comments with a pinch of salt and enjoy agreeing or disagreeing with them but do not take him seriously. If you want a serious opinion on a player` capability then ask Rod Laver or Johnny Mac.
      Good Luck

Simon Reed seems to think it's his job to make predictions.... Like one consulting an oracle, he watches a TV screen and tells what we all can aready see, provides observations even a novice could glean, his expert opinions often equate to estimating that 2 plus 2 makes 4...... You can knock a man for trying...but having made so many wrong predictions lately.....I would really like to ask the self acclaimed pundit," is there any point?!"

Poor Azarenka, this Reed bloke has done it for you now... He said Federer was finished just before he won the last three tournaments of 2011, he then tipped Federer and Kvitova for Oz 2012 and neither made the final... ho hum

No mention of Radwanska here. Not surprised to be honest so agree that Petra Kvitova is probably can get in her way.....
    • Kid 3 months ago
If all the 5 or 6 hitter girls are playing well, its pretty difficult to see Radwanska cutting through the field. Even at the french, they still hit hard, but if there was to be another new grand slam winner in Paris, Radwanska is my favourite then probably Pavlyuchenkova or Bartoli, Lisicki.
    • Know ur role 3 months ago
@ John - Radwanska is a counter puncher and last of her kind to win a Slam was Anastasia, Myskina. Radwanska's chances could be on clay but she isn't a goog clay court player. If Wozniacki couldn't then I don't see Radwanska either. Their games are similar.

Nice shot for Azarenka. She's No.1 and won 17consecutive wins give you the idea of being supreme. Unfortunately, this year Pvitova never met her yet and that is a 101question to swipe so as Serena. Let's see.
  • Kid  •  3 months ago
Your confidence in Victoria winning the golden slam is interesting. This is in light of her past issues with injuries etc, breaking up her season. As it stands, the past couple of slams have all been won by different women. The only thing different this year is that, Wozniacki isn't number one. A little bit early in my opinion, some of the other girls play better in the latter half of the season. I wouldn't discount Kvitova, Sharapova, Kim, even Li Na giving Victoria a racquet full. Victoria has shown her game is top 5, but I'm yet to see her year long consistency. Moreso, to win Australian open and the french in succession is no mean feat.

Isn't she a part timer? Wasn't she destroyed by Azarenka in Australia? Her day is gone, and everything else is wishful thinking.
