Joey BartonQPR midfielder Joey Barton caused something of a stir when he announced via Twitter that he and his partner had named their new-born son 'Cassius'.
Cassius is certainly an unusual name, and a tribute to the great heavyweight boxer Muhammad Ali, who before his conversion to Islam went by the name Cassius Clay.
But as different as the name is, Barton's not even the first sports star to name their child Cassius — that's the name British boxer David Haye gave his own son in 2008.
Nonetheless, sportsmen and women have given their children some extraordinary names in recent times, ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous. Here is a list of our favourites:
As a convert to Islam, and being married to Wahiba, a French-Algerian, it's no surprise that Ribery chose a Arab name for his son this September. But with the Libya conflict raging, plumping for the name Seif El Islam — the same as Muammar Gaddafi's second son — was unexpected.
Ronaldo
On the field, Ronaldo was one of the world's most imaginative players. Off the field registering his son's name, his imagination deserted him. His first-born son was named Ronald.
The American Olympic softball star paved the way for her child's remarkable name when she married Major League Baseball pitcher Casey Daigle. Their second son was a celebration of alliteration — Diesel Dean Daigle — and a younger brother for eldest son Ace to play with.
Arthur Ashe
Grand Slam champion Ashe married a photographer in 1977, and 9 years later the pair adopted their first child, a girl, together. In honour of her mother's profession, she was named Camera.
Gabriel Zakuani
Congolese footballer Zakuani has an unusual enough name of his own, but has gone one step beyond when naming his son. Reportedly obsessed by Twitter, Zakuani last month called his baby boy Trendy.
David Beckham, Cruz and BrooklynDavid Beckham
Four really rather unusual names, but ones that given the Beckhams' fame roll off the tongue. With Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper Seven, the names have been a story for the press in themselves.
Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf
As if it wasn't enough carrying the expectations that being the daughter of two tennis stars with a combined total of 30 Grand Slam singles titles to their name, Agassi and Graf's daughter is called Jaz Elle.
LeBron James
James, one of the hottest properties in the NBA, has dipped into Latin for the name of his first-born child Bryce Maximus.
Tito Ortiz with Jenna JamesonTito Ortiz
Former UFC light-heavyweight champion Ortiz had twins with ex-adult film star Jenna Jameson in 2009. Keeping their mother's surname, the pair were named Journey Jameson, and in an echo of the 19th-century American outlaw, Jesse Jameson.
Jamie Redknapp
The name Beau Harry Redknapp, while not exactly quite as common as Jack or John, is not hugely unusual, but the reasoning is. The 'Harry' looks to be honouring the tradition of naming a child after his grandfather, who just happens to manage Tottenham Hotspur — but the Beau? Suggestions online are that the name was chosen because Harry himself was born in the similar-sounding Bow, a region of London.
