Joey BartonQPR midfielder Joey Barton caused something of a stir when he announced via Twitter that he and his partner had named their new-born son 'Cassius'.
Cassius is certainly an unusual name, and a tribute to the great heavyweight boxer Muhammad Ali, who before his conversion to Islam went by the name Cassius Clay.
But as different as the name is, Barton's not even the first sports star to name their child Cassius — that's the name British boxer David Haye gave his own son in 2008.
Nonetheless, sportsmen and women have given their children some extraordinary names in recent times, ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous. Here is a list of our favourites:

Grand Slam champion Ashe married a photographer in 1977, and 9 years later the pair adopted their first child, a girl, together. In honour of her mother's profession, she was named Camera.

Congolese footballer Zakuani has an unusual enough name of his own, but has gone one step beyond when naming his son. Reportedly obsessed by Twitter, Zakuani last month called his baby boy Trendy.

The name Beau Harry Redknapp, while not exactly quite as common as Jack or John, is not hugely unusual, but the reasoning is. The 'Harry' looks to be honouring the tradition of naming a child after his grandfather, who just happens to manage Tottenham Hotspur — but the Beau? Suggestions online are that the name was chosen because Harry himself was born in the similar-sounding Bow, a region of London.
