An 88-year-old gambler has won £345,000 from a £9 bet - but didn't even realise he'd won until the next day.
Retired tradesman John Jelley took up gambling three years ago to help pass the time, and had gotten into the habit of going to the bookies each day to place a few bets on horses whose names he liked.
Last Saturday he headed up to Ladbrokes in Burry Port, South Wales to place his bet as usual - then went home and forgot all about it.
It was only when he went back to the shop the next day that staff told him he had scooped the enormous sum with his five-horse combination bet, which combines an accumulator with a series of trebles and doubles.
"I thought the staff were taking the mickey when they told me I was rich," John told The Sun.
"When they showed me the screen I just laughed. I've only been betting three years, so I'm a novice. I'm too old to study form - I just liked the horses' names!"
John's winning selections:
Sparrow Hills - winner at 14/1 in the 2.50 at Wincaton
Frankie Figg - non-starter in the 3.15 at Haydock (this part of the bet was void and did not affect the rest of the combinations)
Bugsy's Boy - winner at 12/1 in the 3.25 at Wincanton
Forget It - winner at 12/1 in the 4.00 at Wincanton
Furrows at 66/1 - winner in the 4.30 at Wincanton
