  • An Argentine top flight referee caused a storm in a match at the weekend by awarding a goal after the players had stopped for an offside flag - then reportedly taunting them about it in the car park after the game.

Diego Abal was the man in charge of the Primera Division clash between San Lorenzo and Colon in Buenos Aires on Sunday, and sparked ugly scenes on the pitch by awarding a goal in controversial circumstances.

Colon were looking for an equaliser with just over 20 minutes left, but their latest attack seemed to fizzle out when winger Federico Higuain was flagged for offside on the

  • Athens derby abandoned as fans riot

The Athens derby between Panathinaikos and Olympiacos was abandoned after being interrupted twice by crowd violence on Sunday.

Three fire trucks were called in to extinguish flames as unruly Panathinaikos fans set several sections of the stands on fire.

The start of the second half was delayed by 45 minutes as fans pelted police with flares, molotovs and missiles and was subsequently abandoned altogether with nine minutes remaining with Olympiacos 1-0 ahead through Djamel Abdoun's 51st-minute goal.

Several petrol bombs exploded close to the pitch, prompting referee Anastasio Kakos to end

  • Olympic history: London 1948

    The opening ceremony
The 1940 Olympics were awarded first to Tokyo and then, after the outbreak of war between Japan and China, to Helsinki. They were cancelled after the outbreak of the Second World War.

The 1944 Games were awarded to London and then postponed as the conflict continued. They finally took place in 1948 with the world at peace but the economy in pieces. Rationing was still in place and for the second time Great Britain delivered a cut-price Olympics.

More than 4,000 athletes attended from 59 countries but there was no shiny new Olympic Village; the men stayed in Royal Air Force or Army barracks

  • Biker’s terrifying mountain run

A cyclist's video of a terrifying downhill run has made him famous across the internet.

Peruvian rider Alejandro Paz posted footage of himself barrelling along a narrow, boulder-strewn footpath along a mountainside at blistering speeds.

The rider appears to be heading for disaster at any moment, yet somehow hangs on and stays upright despite the brutal terrain.

Given the speed he was travelling at and the size of the boulders in his way - which had been washed across the path by a recent landslide - the resulting video makes for thrilling, and slightly terrifying, viewing:

  • Mayor’s fluffed kick ends school’s world record

    St Columba's College world record

A school's football world record came to an abrupt end when the local mayor fluffed a kick.

St Columba's College in St Albans were aiming to set the record for most consecutive passes and reached 649 as even two boys on crutches helped tick the record along.

However the ball was then played to the town's mayor Aislinn Lee - and she made a mess of her kick, sending the ball less than half the required 11 metres to end the bid.

"Hundreds of people were watching. There was a huge groan as the ball rolled slowly along and stopped," 16-year-old student Jackson Simmons-Terry told The Sun.

    "It

  • Jonathan Edwards inside a finished apartment

Pictures inside the basic accommodation where superstars like David Beckham and Usain Bolt could stay during the Olympics have been released for the first time.

The Olympic apartments all come with flat-pack furniture and single beds, but staying in the Olympic Village is often seen as an essential experience for even the most celebrated athletes.

At the last Games in Beijing Rafael Nadal and Lionel Messi were among those who stayed in the provided accommodation, which is always much closer to student digs than a lavish hotel.

Premier League chairman Dave Richards - 0"England gave the world football. Then, 50 years later, some guy came along and said, 'You're liars', and they actually stole it. It was called FIFA. Fifty years later, another gang came along called UEFA and stole a bit more." - Premier League chairman Sir Dave Richards at a conference in Qatar. He later apologised for his "light-hearted" comments, despite the fact that he almost certainly meant every word.

"In our country and in Germany, we have a culture. We call it, 'We would like to go for a pint', and that pint is a pint of beer. It is our culture, as much as your culture [in Qatar] is

  • Brazilian star Luiz Adriano guilty of horror miss

Funny videos of footballers blazing over the bar from point-blank range are all well and good, but as often as not it's a lower-league player, or an out-of-position defender, who is at fault.

Shakhtar Donetsk's Brazilian superstar Luiz Adriano has no such excuse for this astonishing blunder. The 24-year-old was served up a perfect pass that presented him with an open goal from inside the six-yard box in the 33rd minute of the Ukrainian Premier League clash against struggling Illichivets:
