  • A year in the life of Mario Balotelli

Barely a week has gone by in the last year when Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli has not hit the headlines for some reason - and we should know, we've checked.

After his latest indiscretion against LA Galaxy last week we have decided to trawl through our archives from the last year and collate all our favourite stories about the Italian striker in one place.

There was plenty for us to choose from too - even without having the rights for THAT bib incident.

Ladies and gentlemen, we give you - a year in the life of Mario Balotelli.

  • Quotes of the week: A recipe for disaster

"It was inevitable in many ways, it was a recipe for disaster when you look at what was going on. We're in Las Vegas it's the last race of the championship and I do think the racers were rolled on the track, and they should have been rolled on the gambling table," former IndyCar driver Mark Blundell give his reaction to the BBC after the death of Dan Wheldon.

"I said before the race that this track is not suitable. People were doing crazy stuff. This is the ugly part of our sport," Scottish driver Dario Franchitti, who won the IndyCar championship, echoes Blundell's opinion that things were

    One-hundred-year-old
Fauja Singh has run his way into the record books after setting eight sprint
    bests in his age category.

    The centenarian
only had to complete the distances to set the record - nobody his age has posted
a timed mark in the past - but did so to claim a host of records.

    But Singh
is now aiming to go one step further when he runs the upcoming Toronto marathon
    on Sunday.

    He has a personal
best of five hours, 40 minutes, set back in 2003, making him the world record

  • Footballer condemned for ‘execution’ celebration

    Mexican
midfielder Marco Fabian has attracted a wave of criticism worldwide for
celebrating a goal by pretending to shoot a team-mate in the head.

    The Chivas
star scored a hat-trick as his side romped to a 5-2 victory over local rivals
Estudiantes Tecos, but the match has come to the attention of many for the way
    he celebrated his first goal.

    Running
away in triumph, Fabian went to team-mate Alberto Medina, held his finger up as
if it was a pistol, and simulated shooting him at point-blank range in the
    head.

    Medina,
playing along, fell to the ground.

    Fabian was
    booked by the referee

But despite their on-pitch dominance, the hosts' afternoon took a turn for the worse  when defender Calico was injured in a tackle.

The stretcher bearers came on to the pitch to take the 23-year-old off for treatment - but their shocking efforts to pick up the player would have made even the Chuckle Brothers

  • Teenager teaches cow to showjump

An enterprising German schoolgirl who couldn't afford a horse has taken up showjumping on a cow.

Fifteen-year-old Regina Mayer refused to let her showjumping dream die when her mother and father told her they weren't able to find the cash to buy her a horse.

Instead, she decided to teach one of the cows on her parents' farm in Laufen how to jump.

It took two years of cajoling, caressing and bribery, but now Regina takes her cow Luna on long rides around the countryside and over obstacles as if she were a lithe polo pony rather than a prize Hereford.

"It's a lot of work, but I enjoy it," said

  • Will Kronum be the world’s next big sport?

Welcome to Kronum - a new sport that is a mash-up of football (Association, Gaelic and Australian), basketball and even quidditch.

The world's newest sport was set up in Philadelphia about a year ago, and is already starting to gain some buzz around the United States.

The game is played in a circular pitch of 70 yards in diameter that is split into four 'quadrants,' each one of which has a goal.

The teams must defend two goals each, and there are two ways to score - one by kicking or throwing the ball into the net, and more profitably, buy getting the ball through one of the five "crown

  • Dubliner becomes taekwondo hall of famer

A 72-year-old Irishman has become the first European
to be inducted into the taekwondo hall of fame.

    Dubliner Robert
Howard visited the North Korean city of Pyongyang to be awarded the honour as he received his ninth-dan
black belt in the martial art. He is one of just nine people in the world to
currently hold the rank of 'Sasug'.

    The
Grandmaster, a retired roofing contractor, took up the sport in 1966 as a way
to blow off steam from his day job: he spent his days laying tiles and his
evenings smashing them to bits with his hands and feet.

    "Over
the years other martial arts have been watered

  • Horse flings jockey over railings

A horse called Here Comes Frazier appeared to be headed for a big win in a US race when an unusual mishap occurred.

The Julien Leparoux-ridden horse was in the lead coming down the home stretch of the 'Bourbon Stakes' at the Keeneland race track in Kentucky when Leparoux was suddenly thrown from the saddle and launched over the railings by the side of the track.

The horse moved to avoid Leparoux's whip and the jockey felt the full brunt of the sudden movement as he was flung to the ground.
