  • Eagle takes down paraglider, paraglider saves eagle

    A Russian
paraglider had a lucky escape after hitting an eagle while soaring over the
    Himalayas.

    The
paraglider, identifying himself as Paravoffka, collided with the bird during
his first flight on a trip to India. With the hapless creature caught in
his rigging, his parachute folded up and he began plummeting to earth.

    Luckily
Paravoffka was able to deploy his reserve parachute to slow his descent, making
a relatively soft landing in the forest via a tree.

    And after
a few minutes collecting himself he was able to free the distressed
    bird from his rigging.

    Thankfully,
    neither aviator nor bird

  • Olympic advert airbrushes out London landmark

    Olympic
chiefs have been forced to apologise after an iconic London landmark was
airbrushed out of a poster promoting the London 2012 Festival.

    HMS
Belfast, a former Second World War craft that has been a floating museum on the
Thames for 40 years, was digitally removed from the posters that were
put up around the nation's capital.

    Veterans'
groups were horrified at what they saw as a perceived snub - particularly one
that emerged just before Remembrance Day - with Andy Smith of the UK National
Defence Association calling it "an insult to those who have served this
    country over the

  • Blunder spotted in SAF stand tribute

Manchester United chiefs have been left more red-faced than even Sir Alex
Ferguson when a blunder was pointed out in their tribute to the legendary Red
    Devils manager.

On Saturday, Ferguson's 25th anniversary at the club was commemorated by renaming the north stand at Old Trafford as the Sir Alex Ferguson
    Stand.

But eagle-eyed signmaker Stewart Neill spotted that the 's' in
'Ferguson' had been installed upside down.

"The tail of the 's' is smaller at the bottom, that should be at
the top," Neill told The Sun.

The club has been informed, with a spokesman confirming that it will be
    corrected "as

  • England pick city-centre hotel for Euro 2012

England will break with recent tradition when they stay in a
busy city centre hotel during Euro 2012.

The Three Lions' have chosen a base at the Hotel Stary in
Krakow, southern Poland, for the tournament which takes place next June in
    Poland and Ukraine.

Krakow's Old Town is a popular tourist destination, and bustles
    with bars and restaurants.

England's hotel is yards from the city's main square -
prompting possible fears the squad's sleep could be disrupted by noisy fans.

It marks a departure from previous tournaments - at the 2010
World Cup England stayed in a remote complex in Rustenburg.

  • Dutch to build £270bn fake mountain

    The
Netherlands is to spend thirty years and as much as £270 billion building a
fake mountain to help the famously flat country become a winter sport superpower.

    The idea
came from a Dutch sports journalist called Thijs Zonneveld, who suggested in a
tongue-in-cheek article that a man-made mountain should be built to help
overcome the lack of decent hills in his homeland.

    But his
cheeky suggestion was taken seriously by Dutch architects' firm Hoffers and
    Kruger
, who drew up plans for a 7,000ft mountain - that's twice the height of Snowdon, and far bigger than 4,409ft Ben Nevis.

    The plans

  • Villagers to burn 30ft Balotelli effigy

Villagers in Kent will burn a 30-foot effigy of Mario Balotelli on Bonfire Night.

The Manchester City star was chosen as the guy for Edenbridge's celebrations on November 5 after he hit the headlines last month.

The Italian's Cheshire house caught fire after friends reportedly let off fireworks in the bathroom, making him the perfect candidate for the Guy Fawkes' night ritual.

He is the latest topical figure to receive the dubious tribute - previous celebrities to be torched in effigy include Manchester United star Wayne Rooney, Jonathan Ross, Katie Price and Cherie Blair.

  • Club swaps names for Twitter handles

A football club in Mexico has decided to replace the players' names on the back of their shirts with their Twitter handles instead.

The unique move sees Mexican Primera Division side Jaguares de Chiapas's star players put their twitter addresses underneath their numbers along with the Twitter handle of the club sponsor.

It follows a move by Liga side Valencia who recently put the club's Twitter address at the front of their shirts.

Jaguares are one of the newest clubs in Mexican football and were only founded in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, in the state of Chiapas in 2002.

    They currently lie in an

  • Rooney’s acting ‘masterclass’

Wayne Rooney has added to his acting portfolio with a
spectacularly wooden performance in an advert for one of Manchester United's
    main sponsors.

Rooney, along with team-mates Ryan Giggs and Patrice Evra,
stars in the commercial for Chilean winemaker Casillero del Diablo.

Playing on the word 'diablo' - Spanish for 'devil' - the
players discuss the arrival of a 'new devil' at the club.

They are deeply concerned, justifiably as it turns out
because the Old Trafford pitch is then struck by a fireball.

This final development provokes just a rueful stroke of the
    chin from Rooney, whose performance

  • Football club sells trophy cabinet

After 20 years without silverware, non-league club Cambridge United have taken the extreme step of selling off their trophy cabinet on eBay.

The wall unit is being flogged as part of a boardroom refurbishment at the club, with proceeds going to the U's long-suffering fans and a local charity.

The eBay listing says: "This is a quality piece of furniture which would look great in anyone's home - and on top of that you will be owning a piece of unique sporting history."

The cabinet measures 14ft by 7ft, boasts a glass front and lights and features extensive display shelving space.

    Blackburn
fans calling for the removal of manager Steve Kean have been banned from
displaying protest banners before and during Saturday's home match with
    Chelsea.

    A fourth
successive demonstration is planned at Ewood Park, but the club will not allow
any banners into the ground until after the final whistle.

    Rovers
will, however, allow fans to stage their protest after the match with banners
which have been handed over to stewards prior to entry.
