US sporting legend Babe Didrikson winning the 80m hurdles

The Great Depression provided the backdrop as the Games returned to the United States for the first time since the unbalanced activities of St Louis 1904.

1932 Games posterThe number of competing nations held up quite strongly but with lack of funds and great distances to travel, they sent smaller teams. The total of participants dropped well below 2,000, whereas in Amsterdam it had exceeded 3,000.

Whether or not the economics around the Games dictated the format is not clear, but for the first time outside Athens the schedule was compact rather than spread out over months on end. In that sense, Los Angeles

  • McIlroy takes on Sharapova at tennis

Golf's new world number one Rory McIlroy tried his hand at a different sport on Monday, winning a rally against Maria Sharapova during his girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki's tennis exhibition.

Dane Wozniacki summoned McIlroy from his courtside seat at Madison Square Garden and handed him the racquet in a lighthearted moment before the final game of her match, which she lost 6-3 6-4.

McIlroy resisted at first but then placed the tennis ball down on the blue surface, addressed it as if hitting a golf chip shot, then picked it up and started a friendly rally with the number-two ranked Sharapova.

  • Unconscious player sent off for diving

Excessive diving is one of the curses of the modern game, but a referee at a Belgian lower league match has gone way too far in trying to redress the balance.

Julien Lecomte of Hainaut provincial side RSC Templeuvois was playing in the clash against USG Quevy last week when he was elbowed in the neck by an opponent and landed badly in the penalty area. Here's what happened next, courtesy of this clip from local TV:

If you picked out the distinctly non-Flemish sounding word "knocked out" from that video, you'll have realised what happened: Lecomte, far from feigning injury, was seriously hurt,

    China crisis

  • NASCAR driver live-tweets picture of crash from inside car

NASCAR driver Brad Keselowski caused a stir when he tweeted a picture of a crash at the prestigious Daytona 500 race while inside his car.

Former Formula One driver Juan Pablo Montoya had crashed into a safety vehicle loaded with kerosene, causing an explosion and fire. Drivers in both vehicles escaped serious injury.

Keselowski, stuck in his Penske Racing car as stewards dealt with the hazard, took a picture on his phone and tweeted it with the message: "Fire! My view"

After that the racer continued to chat with fans via the social network during the lengthy delay.

    The tweets helped

  • NASCAR star helps solve hit-and-run killing

    NASCAR driver Kevin Conway

Most NASCAR sponsors measure their investment in on-car advertisements in dollars and cents. Here's a story of one with far more value.

About four years ago, a young woman named Melissa Lech was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in suburban Chicago. Since then, her family had sought in vain for any clues about the identity of the driver.

Kevin Conway heard of Melissa's story, and agreed to put her picture and information on the rear deck lid (what, in street cars, would be the boot) of his Nationwide car for last September's Chicagoland race. Still no word, until Sunday night.

  • Footballer’s hat-trick lands him in jail

Adam Harrison scored a hat-trick with a 'bad back'

A thief who avoided prison by saying he had a bad back has been locked up after a local newspaper reported on his footballing exploits.

Adam Harrison, 25, had originally been given a suspended sentence when he was caught stealing lead from a Salvation Army church roof in his hometown of Macclesfield last July.

During the robbery, he tried to flee down a drainpipe but instead plunged 40ft and hurt his back — the courts showed mercy when sentencing him the following month and suspended his jail term.

Last October he was back in court and ordered to do unpaid work in lieu of his jail sentence

  • Goalkeeper scores loop-the-loop own goal

An Israeli top flight keeper has scored a surefire contender for the strangest own goal of all time.

Maccabi Haifa's Assaf Mendes was between the sticks for a friendly match against Dynamo Kiev on a windy Tuesday afternoon. A very, very windy Tuesday afternoon indeed, as Mendes found to his cost while hitting a clearance up the pitch:

Though the keeper ended up looking particularly silly as the ball looped back on itself and bounced into the net, we should point out in his defence that goalkeepers are not generally used to judging the trajectory of balls through gale force winds.

    And if

  • A former American football quarterback put his skills to a very different use as he set a new world record for throwing a paper aeroplane.

Joe Ayoob threw the dart an amazing 226 feet 10 inches in an aircraft hanger at McClellan Air Force base in Sacramento, Calidornia.

The 27-year-old shattered the previous record by over 20 feet with a perfect throw which saw the plane climb, dive and then climb again before almost running out of room in the vast space.

"I grew up making paper airplanes," he said after his feat. "Some people might think, 'What's the big deal? It's just a paper airplane.'
