Borat anthem played by mistake at medals ceremony

Kazakhstan's shooting team demanded an apology after a spoof national anthem from the comedy film Borat was played instead of the real one at a medal ceremony in Kuwait.

Maria Dmitrenko had won a gold at the competition in Kuwait, only for the anthem to be played in error.

Coach Anvar Yunusmetov informed Kazakh news agency Tengrinews of the error, adding that the tournament's organisers had also made a mistake with the Serbian national anthem.

"Then Maria Dmitrienko's turn came," Yunusmetov said. "She got up on to the pedestal and they played a completely different anthem, offensive to Kazakhstan."

Kazakhstan politicians have reacted with anger to the incident, with foreign ministry spokesman Ilyas Omarov told Russia's ITAR-Tass news agency the incident "is, of course, a scandal and demands a thorough investigation, which we intend to conduct."

Sacha Baron Cohen's 2006 film 'Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan' caused a stir in Kazakhstan when it was released, depicting its people as bigoted and backwards. The anthem praises Kazakhstan for its superior potassium exports and for having the cleanest prostitutes in the region.

The film was banned in Kazakhstan.

Dimitrenko appears to see the funny side in the video, however. Listening to the anthem at the ceremony, she appears unmoved in the early stages, before smiling as it finishes.

    The ceremony was later rerun.
