Brazilian star misses open goal from two yards

Brazilian star Deivid is a good footballer. Last season he was top scorer for Flamengo, the side within which former World Player of the Year Ronaldinho plies his trade.

On Wednesday night, however, he made the kind of blunder that would shame a novice striker playing for his school U10s.

In the 35th minute of his club's Guanabara Trophy semi-final aganist Vasco da Gama, with the score at 1-1, he was set up for the easiest tap-in of his career thanks to a brilliant bit of dribbling and a perfect pass from right-back Leonardo Moura. What happens next beggars belief:

Vasco, scarcely able to believe their luck at being let off, won the match 2-1 thanks to a late goal from Diego Souza. Deivid, meanwhile, has become the butt of hundreds of jokes in Brazil - none of which we understand, because we don't speak Portuguese...

I love the way he falls into the goal after missing the rebound off the post... it's like that's supposed to compensate because at least something went in the goal :)

Money must have exchanged hands somewhere, if not just to get him off their books!

He has tried to place it right in the corner, instead of just tapping it in. Error of judgement, mistakes happen. No big deal. Move on. Life is short.
