The Argentinian football player who provoked global outrage when throwing a dog against a fence has been sacked by his club.
Jose Jimenez, representing Bella Vista in a match against San Juan in the Tucuman Province, infuriated spectators, his opponents and, after the clip went viral, animal lovers across the world with his disgraceful behaviour.
After a stray dog entered the field of play, Jimenez grabbed the animal around the neck and tried to hurl it over a metal fence that surrounded the pitch.
The dog bounced off the fence and ran away, but Jimenez was quickly shown a red card and targeted with missiles from the crowd as opponents raced over to confront him.
The shocking scenes pressed his employers into action and they sent a strong message by announcing the player had been sacked on Wednesday.
Bella Vista said in a rather unwieldy statement (which we have reworked into English that makes sense):
"During the course of the match between Club Aletico San Juan and our club on June 9, it has become public knowledge that a player violently threw a dog which had entered the field of play while the game was unfolding.
"This was spread by the written and televised press in the province. Our club, to safeguard its human and sporting image, which was deeply damaged by this incomprehensible attitude, has decided to release Jose Antonio Jimenez."
