This is crowd control, Ukraine-style

Football hooligans looking to cause trouble at this year's Euro 2012 tournament better tread carefully if they are in Ukraine: the hosts have called in a quartet of fighter jets to help quell any disorder.

The Russian-built MiG 29s - each packing 30mm cannons and air-to-air missiles - will be deployed to the football tournament for the duration to counter any extreme troublemaking.

And just in case the 1,5000mph jets aren't enough, there will also be a pair of helicopter gunships on hand to help keep the peace.

"Up to four fighters and two helicopters will be constantly keeping watch," Major-General Viktor Hamora of Ukrainian Air Force Command told the Austrian Times.

Hooligans of Europe: you have been warned.

    Why?

Seriously, what on Earth are they going to do? Fly over them menacingly?
    • Beezer 3 months ago
Throw them to the floor & beat them roughly around the head.

Have you ever heard a low flying jet. At an airshow they are loud as hell and only going a fraction of the speed at which they can low fly. A low flyby at high speed will damn near rupture your eardrums. They use this tactic in Afghanistan, calling it a "show of force".If they done this in a city though , they would blow out all the windows ,so they will probably just circle "menacingly" which will still be loud enough to distract the rioters.

  • NEIL  •  London, England  •  3 months ago
If you think that is impressive, you should see what we are using for the olympics... Stealth bombers, apache gunships, cruise missiles, oh and 400 community support officers.......
    • ANDREW 3 months ago
PCSO'S wont be used at the olympic sites, think you are getting them confused with traffic wardens, everyone else does, since traffic wardens are now wearing similar uniforms to PCSO,S and there are a hell of a lot more traffic wardens than PCSO,S
    • anton 3 months ago
We havn't got any bombers let alone stealth planes, apart from those we are using everything else.
The jet pictured is GERMAN but be assured the Ukrainians will not put up with any nonsense, pick on a copper over there and you'll be done even if he punches, yes punches you first!!!.

Sounds a bit extreme: I mean, if there's a pitch invasion, what are they going to do - bomb
    the stadium?

30mm cannons at a 1000 rounds per minute, now that is how to quell a riot, my hat is raised to the Ukrainian government.

Don’t mock the old MIG 29, Thay are no pushover ask some of the old fly boys that have been in combat against them, OK it’s a German marking on it, and to me it looks like it could do with a coat of paint. But bottoms down its sill a Russian built Mig.
