How did the referee not see this?

Fans at last weekend's FA Trophy clash between Blyth Spartans and Droylsden were left stunned when the referee missed the most blatant of handballs on the line.

In the first half of a match that eventually finished 2-2, Blyth striker Mick Tait got his head on a flick-on and the ball was clearly heading for the back of the next only for Liam Brownhill to make a brilliant save on the line.

Trouble is, Droylsden player Brownhill is a defender - not a goalkeeper.

It seems that everybody in the ground saw clearly what had happened except for referee Steve Smith and his assistants.

"How the linesman has not given a goal, and sent the lad off in the first half, nobody will ever know," said Tait after the match.

You can see from the video below just how clear-cut the decision was; thankfully for Blyth, they won the replay 4-0 on Monday night to ensure their passage into the fourth round.
