Luis Suarez being banned for 10 games for biting an opponent has been labelled as 'harsh' by some, but it's unlikely Pieter Rumaropen will have any such sympathisers.
When a referee awarded a controversial penalty against Indonesian side Persiwa Wamena with eight minutes to play at 1-1, it’s fair to assume the entire squad were none too happy.
Wamena’s Rumaropen, however, took his sense of injustice to shocking levels by running straight over to the official and landing a vicious left to his face.
Though the replays showed that his team-mate appeared to get some of the ball with his risky challenge, they also underscored in slow-motion repeats of the aftermath that Rumaropen is in deep trouble.
The official was taken straight to hospital with his nose bleeding a gusher, and after a 15 minute pause a replacement official issued the inevitable red card.
“The case has been forwarded to the disciplinary committee,” said the league's communications manager Azwan Karim. “There will be an extra punishment as well as the red card.”
Their opponents, Pelita Bandung Raya, went on to win 2-1 courtesy of the converted penalty.
