An Israeli top flight keeper has scored a surefire contender for the strangest own goal of all time.
Maccabi Haifa's Assaf Mendes was between the sticks for a friendly match against Dynamo Kiev on a windy Tuesday afternoon. A very, very windy Tuesday afternoon indeed, as Mendes found to his cost while hitting a clearance up the pitch:
Though the keeper ended up looking particularly silly as the ball looped back on itself and bounced into the net, we should point out in his defence that goalkeepers are not generally used to judging the trajectory of balls through gale force winds.
And if neither the goal nor the the palm trees almost being uprooted in the background don't convince you of how windy it was, we'll simply add that the match had to be abandoned after an hour because one of the goals blew over.
