Linesman floored by piece of cardboard

A linesman in the Belgian top flight has become a laughing stock after his theatrical reaction to being struck by a missile during a match.

Assistant referee Michele Scatorchia was running the line during the match between Lierse and Zulte Waregem when he was struck by something thrown from the crowd.

Going down as if he'd been bullseyed by a sniper on the roof of the Herman Vanderpoortenstadion, Scatorchia's reaction sparked terror that something awful had happened among his fellow officials, the players on the pitch and almost all of the 8,500 fans present.

The referee blew the whistle to stop the match immediately, while several players rushed to the linesman's aid as he writhed in agony on the turf, holding his head in a manner to suggest that he was trying to stop his brains from spilling out.

Thankfully, Scatorchia was completely unharmed - an escape that seemed slightly less miraculous when it turned out that all he'd been hit by was a cardboard tray used for carrying coffee cups.

The charitable explanation is that the shock of being struck probably accounts for the official's extreme reaction.

But the baffled looks of the Lierse players say it all about a piece of playacting that comes sadly too late for Scatorchia to earn himself an Oscar nomination.

Wasn't he just being ironic because that's what happens when most footballers get tackled, which probably equates to being hit by some cardboard?

As a Ref myself I can imagine it would be a bit of a shock to be hit by something but to be honest that was unbelievable, he is goosed now when he Refs any future games when he trys to book a player for diving on feigning an injury, watch out for a goal celebration at his next match when the scoring team impersanate him... ha ha, hope i gave some players an idea there

So it's not just the players who over exaggerate every slight nudge they get in a game then...

The whole zeitgeist in the football world is one of IMMATURITY and attention seeking. They all love to be seen as victims, from the players to the fans to the officials. Its of epedemic proportions now, I'm just glad that these people never became soldiers or firefighters. They are Nancy Boys ! They are Nancy Boys ! no they are....they really are.

So true. Next week he'll refuse to shake the other line guy's hand I bet, make front page on yahoo again, all over the news, it'll be all anyone can talk about.

So true. Boxing, rugby and endurance sports are proper sports- anything involving suffering separates the men from the boys, not a load of overpaid divas mincing about for 90 minutes then crying when have to play more than a couple of matches within a week. People take the p i ss out of sports like cycling, but do a bit of reading about just how hard races like the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a Espana are and how riders like Johnny Hoogerland just suck it up and carry on riding even when seriously injured, and you'd be deluded not to respect them.

When even linesmen are taking dives, it's getting harder and harder to take this sport seriously.
