Fans of World Player of the Year Lionel Messi will have a chance to see a watch designed for him as a fundraiser on 9-10 May at Sotheby’s, shortly before it goes on auction on 11 May as part of the auction house’s spring Important Watches sale.
The No.10 Royal Oak Chronograph Leo Messi was designed with his collaboration. It is a 41 mm chronograph in platinum, the 10th watch produced by Audemars Piguet in a limited series of 100 dedicated to the player.
The watch is lot 110 in the sale as a nod to Leo Messi’s number 10 shirt number for both Barcelona and Argentina, and the winning bidder will also get an Argentina national team’s number 10 jersey autographed by Messi, with the original drawing of the watch signed by the footballer and Audemars Piguet designer Octavio Garcia.
The successful bidder will also be given the chance to meet the football legend in person in Barcelona, says Sotheby’s.
The money from the watch sale will be donated to the Messi Foundation, to be used to make improvements to his local hospital in Rosario, says Messi.
Messi is the first player in history to win four consecutive Ballon d’Or awards. In 2012, he scored no less than 91 goals in 69 matches, a new world record.
