Slovenia win ski jumping event despite huge crash

Slovenia won the team gold at the ski flying World Cup event in Oberstdorf, Germany, despite one of their team ending up in hospital following a huge crash.

It was the first ever victory for Slovenia in a team ski jumping event at the top level, and came in an event that that was decided on a single round of jumps due to bad weather.

Jurij Tepes, Jure Sinkovec, Peter Prevc and Robert Kranjec scored 732.5 points to edge Austria into second place on 731.8. Norway were third with 715.9, while the Austrians' second place was enough to win them the FIS Team Tour title.

Amazingly, the victory came despite one of the Slovenian quartet, Prevc, ending up with a fractured collarbone. Immediately after landing what was a record-equalling 225.5m jump, Prevc lost control and tumbled to the snow.

His injury made it seem that Slovenia would be robbed of a thrilling second round of jumps against the much-favoured Austrians, but the winds picked up and snow began to fall more heavily forcing organisers to declare the first round of jumps as the official result.

That decision ensured gold for Slovenia, with Prevc already on his way to hospital for the x-rays that confirmed his broken bone.

Prevc escaped quite lightly when you consider he took off at nearly 60 mph and crashed at pretty much the same speed only wearing a light suit and some undies!!! These boys are the dons, they do this week in week out through the winter and 225m isn't the furthest they go either. I'd recommend watching the event from Planica a little later for some superb big jumps, if the conditions are right!

If 225m isnt the furthest they go how is it record equalling then ??

Heck of a jump , especially when you look at the weather conditions !!! good on him , and yes I'd still be rolling round on the floor after a landing like that !!
As the fall came after the landing the jump was passed as good its only if you lose it while still in the air or on impact that it becomes a no jump

Why is it we still have to watch clips on Yahoo that like like they were taken on a video phone that is about 10 years old. I think Yahoo needs to be introduced to HD

The view from the top of the ski jump at Innsbruck was enough for me and the long walk up that steep hill, no thanks just too frightening. Prevc deserves his medal.

I don't know how this jump got much in the way of a score, as you are awarded points for style in air and landing (which was 0), and points deducted if you fail to land close to the K liine which he flew over by miles. It's not always the longest jump that scores the highest.

Is breaking a collarbone a regular thing for these guys... He doesnt seem particularly bothered!!!

it was fractured but still held in place which is not as bad i guess (considering), its still "bad" dont get me wrong but the adrenaline also has a lot to do with him walking it off, it will be different 20 odd minutes later .. :D Still a mighty jump from the Slovenian :D
