Mauritania's Hamza Labeid became an unwitting star at the recent World Swimming Championship in Shangahi after an embarrassing false start saw him instantly disqualified.
Many swimmers have 'jumped the gun' in the past, but it seems that Labeid knew he made a mistake as soon as he started his leap into the pool, but his attempt to check his dive just led to a belly flop that led to cries of laughter from the crowd in Shanghai.
In the past Labeid would have got a second chance to try and compete but a new rule was brought in a few years ago meaning that you do not get a second chance after a false start.
Labeid's gaffe happened in the heats for the men's 50m freestyle; Brazil's Cesar Cielo eventually went on to win gold in the event.
